Today we’d like to introduce you to Cierra Anderson
Hi Cierra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion in the beauty industry started with makeup artistry around the year I graduated from Wayne State University in 2014. I started off with just playing in makeup and doing it for myself. A local makeup artist saw my potential and invited me to take one of her makeup classes. That was my first makeup class but it definitely was not my last. From then, I’ve had several clients for all occasions including photo shoots and bridal parties. I even had the opportunity to work on a few local indie films. I’ve traveled to different makeup conventions where I continued to learn new skills from other professional makeup artists and perfect my craft.
In 2019, my interest in the beauty industry grew beyond makeup and into nails. While working part-time in retail, I came across an $8 nail drill and decided to experiment on my own nails. What started as a simple hobby quickly became a passion, leading me to pursue formal training and earn my license.
Attending school while maintaining a full time job seemed impossible. It was difficult finding a school that did not conflict with my work schedule. I knew I would never make it to class on time while facing rush hour traffic, but God opened a door for me in 2021. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, my job allowed us to work remotely for almost 3 years, giving me the opportunity to attend cosmetology school. I graduated from L’esprit Academy and received my license all before going back to work in the office. I was even blessed financially to pay for my tuition without needing student loans. Through hard work, dedication, and most importantly, faith, I became a business owner, makeup artist, and nail technician.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I will say becoming an entrepreneur while working full time in corporate America is not for the weak. It takes a lot of prayer, hard work, and endurance. I’ve been tested mentally, spiritually, and financially. When I landed my first job in the nail industry, I felt intimidated. I didn’t always think my work was good enough and I didn’t always feel like I was supposed to be in this space; especially starting in my 30’s. Plus, trying to put myself out there and build clientele was another struggle I faced. But along the way, I’ve learned some valuable lessons: trust God, trust the process, be patient with yourself, and grant yourself some grace. Growth takes time, and everyone has to start somewhere. I am so glad I didn’t give up and I kept going. Now, I’m able to encourage others to pursue their dreams and remind them that a few bumps in the road does not mean the journey isn’t worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed manicurist and a freelance makeup artist based in the metro Detroit area. I am the owner of EyeCiGlam, LLC. As a makeup artist, I love to enhance my clients natural beauty while making them look and feel like their best selves for any occasion. As a nail tech, I love to pamper my clients whether I am providing a classic manicure or an acrylic set. One of my favorite things to do as a nail tech is experimenting with nail art and providing a creative look for my clients. With over a decade of experience in customer service, I really take pride in providing my clients with the best experience possible during their service. I just love that I am able to have fun and have a creative outlet for myself.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I personally feel like beauty trends always have a habit of repeating themselves. Unless someone is brave enough to step out of the box, throw in a curveball and effectively change the game, we will continue to see repeated trends. I would love to see beauty trends from the 90s make an appearance again.
