Today we’d like to introduce you to Tia Nichols.
Hi Tia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began drawing as soon as my motor skills allowed me to pick up a pencil. I always wanted to be an artist but took a lot of time to navigate the life of a creative with practical priorities in mind. I considered being a sketch artist, criminal investigator, teacher, and psychologist. However, once I began growing through academia, I realized being an artist isn’t too bad, and there are ways to be successful as one, despite societal expectations or norms. It wasn’t until middle school that I really began to consider art as a profession, and by the time high school and undergrad came around I was committed. I’ve been making ever since. In May 2022 I received my MFA and now I’m ready to hit the ground running.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Being an artist has been a bit of a roller coaster. There have been times where I felt that I couldn’t focus or find motivation with my new work. I would get studio block. I have also found acquiring materials for the visions I have for my work to be tasking, but never impossible.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I decided to pursue working in galleries during my senior year of undergrad. I started out as an intern at New City Arts in Charlottesville, VA. That was my first experience working behind the scenes and following through with administrative work for artists. Since then, I have served as a gallery assistant and curatorial assistant to places such as BULK Space, Wayne State Galleries, and Carr Center. As a result of these work opportunities, I have been able to tackle challenges head-on, adapt, problem-solve, and think innovatively and creatively. I am most proud of myself for maintaining my passion for the arts in all forms.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Persevere and remain passionate about what you’re doing. Be patient with yourself, take breaks. Sleeping, eating, breathing, and reading is a part of the process too!
