Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Elowsky.
Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My husband had previously worked for another landscaping company and decided he wanted to try to start his own company. We weren’t married at the time, but I helped him develop his business strategy, market the company, and do his bookkeeping, and human resources. We started with 65 customers, and grew quite quickly. We were a “one man band”, two if you included me, and today we employ over 25 people, and have roughly 1200 customers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Never! Any business owner can attest to this. As owners, we wear multiple. Ryan does everything from employee management, to meeting with clients and quoting jobs, to equipment maintenance and even after 20 years, you’ll still catch him on jobsites, helping when and where he can. The same could be said for me. While I started out doing the bookkeeping and human resources, as our business grew and our services expanded, I began to do landscape design, which I truly love and have a passion for. So, much like Ryan, I have my own fair share of business operations I tend to, you’ll often times still find me on the jobsite too, overseeing and project managing. Outside of wearing many hats, we’ve learned so much along the way, and through many lessons, how to be more efficient, how to provide better quality services, developing true relationships with our employees, and keeping true to our basic goals, providing quality services at an affordable price. Through the pandemic, we learned so much, about ourselves, and our business practices. In what was a time of extremely quick growth, we learned a few years later, that we were comfortable with classic statement “less is more”, and put a lot of work and effort into “right sizing” our company. We found that reducing the size of our customer base, and our serviceable areas, we could provide better quality work, with less employees, which in turn made everyone much happier.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a full service property maintenance provider, offering everything from weekly lawn maintenance and monthly fertilization programs, to landscape design and installation, hardscaping, including paver patios and retaining walls, fall/spring cleanups, and snowplowing. We believe what sets us apart is the size of our company. We are big enough to offer all of the services we can, yet pride ourselves on remaining small enough, to provide customer service to you as if you were family. Speaking of family, we are a very family centered business. From husband and wife as owners, we have office staff that are family, and multiple employees in various positions in the business that are siblings, and we even have a father/son lawn crew.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Oh man, that’s a tough one! Probably, and honestly, spending time with my family, especially on special family vacations making memories
