Conversations with Setitra McCain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Setitra McCain.

Hi Setitra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’m a wife and have been married for 3 years. Together, we have 6 children, 5 boys and one girl. I started doing style & beauty blogging in Fall 2020 after having to close down my doors to my natural cleaning company due to the pandemic. I needed something flexible during the time when my kids were homeschooled. I spent months thinking about what to do next in my career. I wanted to be sure that whatever it is that I chose to do, it was something I can be truly committed to. I’ve always been into style and beauty. My mother and my late best friend are my inspiration for my blog. Growing up I use to watch my mom all the time get dolled up, she is the type that stays dressed up head to toe, and my late best friend Erica and I use to play dress-up all the time when I would visit her home in Florida. I wanted to do something that I can dedicate to her and also do what I always love. Erica would be so proud; I wish she was here to see all that I’ve accomplished.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, the journey to success is never easy. There have definitely been some bumps on the road, and mistakes to learn from. Some of the things I struggled with at the beginning of my career were figuring out how to pitch to brands, creating an aesthetic feed, and deciding what that will look like. There was a moment when I was very new and taking on lots of free/gifted collabs, which was nice but also very overwhelming. I learned very quickly how much time and effort is needed to put into creating high-quality and engaging content. I learned shortly how to create a content scheduler, media kits, how to pitch to brands, and video editing, and picked up some photography skills by watching influencers on YouTube.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a style and beauty blogger. I create product reviews for beauty and skincare products on my blog. I am also a virtual stylist, where I create style boards, and daily outfit inspo and work with clients to help them find the right styles and accessories. I love sharing what I love with my audience. I can say from the bottom of my heart I love blogging. I am proud that my hard work is starting to pay off. I am most proud of getting better at SEO and having a few blog posts that has gone viral and made it to Google’s first page. At the beginning that seemed so far away, so it’s so good to see that. I now work with an ad agency and get paid to blog. I’ve worked with some amazing brands, have had some amazing opportunities locally, and have been growing my network.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have had a few blogger friends that have helped me along the way, as needed. Shout out to JohnnieMay (@ heytherejae_) and Kaya (@comfygirlcurls). The two of them always have engaging Instagram stories and doing very well with their blogging careers. Lots of paid collabs, and they have both started before I did and always have the best and honest advice. When I needed help with my media kit, rates, or blog help, they gave me very helpful tips. The two of them are also Pinterest queens, and share their tips on social media. So, if you are ever in need of Pinterest help, social media tips, or questions about brand collabs, you can head over to their socials for more!
