Conversations with Nicole Lockhart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Lockhart.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started with photography at 8/9 years old. I had a MySpace fan page for Hannah Montana Because I begged my parents for me to have a my space and they really didn’t want me to but that is what we agreed on, a Hannah Montana fan page. On my space, there were lots of people editing photos and stuff and I wanted to learn how to do it so someone told me to get Photoshop and I started learning editing photos through YouTube! That continued into middle school where I edited my friends’ photos and then into high school where I joined a business program that my high school had! In that program, I wrote up my first business plan called awake dreaming Photography.

I’d also say social media and connecting with people through Instagram is a big reason I am to where I am today with photography! I’ve met some of my closest friends and some really amazing people through Instagram and creating art!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My life has never been a smooth road. I was born six weeks early on June 4, 1997, to my beautiful mom who was born with spina bifida. While I came into a very loving home my family life has never been easy due to finances. We struggled a lot with bills and I dealt a lot with gas electricity being cut off and not having cable or Internet and stuff like that. When I was 14, we lost the trailer we were living in and from 14 to a month before turning 18 we were homeless. Growing up and struggling with just not having many resources really taught me to like grab any resources I could and really take any opportunities come my way. That even though my family didn’t have money and that’s always been a struggle for us my parents have always been super supportive of me doing photography and it’s let me take anything they have to offer to do what I love to do! I’m really grateful for my parents and my older brother. Recently my father who is probably one of my biggest fans was diagnosed with cancer and that is just been so hard for me because I love my dad so much and I don’t like seeing him in pain.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’d say my work is creative directing and photography because I do the technical photography part but I am also very heavy into creating concepts. I love styling, creating a set or creating a concept around a location. I would say I’m drawn to very dreamy things, weird things and creepy gory things! I’d like to think I am versatile but I definitely specialize in things that are more dreamy or nightmarish haha.

I’m most proud of being able to create photos and art and being able to support my family even though things can be hard and nothing’s ever easy. but I get to do that and that’s amazing. I also graduated college in 2021 and that is just something that is really cool to me.

Lastly, I’m super proud of making connections with really amazing people. The support that is around me and my art is just like I sometimes feel like why do I deserve this so I just think that’s amazing!!!

What sets me apart from others I feel like everyone’s different so there’s a lot that sets me apart from others but also, I feel like I work really hard to be affordable and available for all kinds of people. Being able to shoot all types of people all types of concepts and work. I  just see all these different things it’s just really cool but also because I do so much that also sets me apart from other people!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I always watch TV why edit so having streaming services is really important to me because being able to like listen to a TV show while I’m editing photos is very important. YouTube is a lifesaver for learning how to edit different types of things and different styles you wanna go for! When I can, I also like to tune in to a friend’s Twitch stream about editing she is super helpful.  Its nice just seeing how someone else is with editing and flowing with it.

(Shout out Gabby)

Lastly, my brother is not an app or a blog but my brother helps me do a lot of my setups and drives me to shoot since stuff so he’s very important to help me do my best in life.
