Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Scheibe.
Hi Mikayla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had a love for photography, ever since I was a little girl. When I was 7, my parents bought me two disposable cameras for our family trip to Hawaii, and within the first afternoon, I had used up the entire first camera, not realizing I had limited exposures. From then on I was labeled as the documentarian amongst my family and friends. I’ve always loved capturing life’s moments exactly how they unfolded, and that has carried me into my career as a wedding photographer. I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of photographing weddings for the past 9 years now and I couldn’t be more grateful to be here.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m very fortunate to say that It’s been a relatively smooth road. But like everyone, there’s always going to be growing pains when it comes to running your own business. There’s been growth and lessons learned over the last 9 years, with my main ones being not to take rejection personally, and how to set healthy boundaries and a good work/life balance. While there are specific things about business that you can learn from higher education and courses, when it comes to the world of wedding photography, there are some things you’re just not prepared for and you can only learn along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer. I specialize in couples and weddings, but I also photograph families, boudoir and branding for other creatives.
What sets me apart is my intentionality with my couples. I pride myself on my client experience as well as my artistic approach. I capture a mix of documentary and editorial work to give my clients the best of both worlds.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that there’s no “right or wrong way” to photography. There’s a lot of people on social media who try to school you in their personal opinions for how to do things, but that’s the beauty of art — it’s all subjective. My approach might be different than someone else’s approach, yet we can both produce beautiful work.
I used to compare myself to others, and sometimes I still will, but then I remind myself that everyone has their own unique perspective. And as long as you’re providing quality work and your clients love the end product, that’s what matters the most. you don’t need to follow a specific formula that works for someone else if that’s not what works for you.
