Today we’d like to introduce you to Matalyn Rowe.

Matalyn Rowe

Hi Matalyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2014 I was pregnant with my daughter, Vera, while my husband was deployed he bought my first camera so I could capture her birth, and the month after since he would not be back home until after she was born. I quickly grew to love taking photos. After I had my second child, my son, Abram in 2016 I started taking more photos, and started to get asked by people to take there family photos. I was really scared in the beginning to take other peoples photos, but my husband told me, “just try it for a month, and if you do not like it, you do not have to do it anymore”…..here we are almost 9 years later. My photography business has been one of the biggest blessings in my life. It has literally made me better, more independent, outgoing, spontaneous and generous person. Capturing the highs and lows of peoples of lives is such an honor that I will never take for granted.
I have made some of the best relationships with people. I get to capture people start new journeys, fall in love, create life, creating new memories, the list goes on! It truly is the best job. One of my favorite perks of my job is being able to travel the world! I have done weddings in: St. Lucia, Costa Rica, Mexico and all over the USA. I have captured over 150+ weddings, and I have zero intentions of stopping.
I am so passionate about capturing the perfect moment for my clients, but also making sure they are having an enjoyable experience during our time together, and making sure they are taking in the moment. The hugs and thank you’s from my clients at the end of a session is the best.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Where I am today in my career did not come easily. I had a lot of sleepless nights, miles and miles driven on my car, burn out from over doing it and days where I didn’t see my family until late at night, but this career has also taught me how to balance life and work, and the last two years I have finally found that. I would over book myself, because I didn’t know how to use the word, “No” to my clients. I know now that it is okay to tell clients that if a certain day and time is already booked or I am just too full, that I am sorry, but we are just going to have to find a different time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer, who specializes in Wedding Photography. I also wouldn’t be able to make my clients galleries/wedding days feel complete without my Assistant, Jerrica. She makes my business better with her wonderful personality, and the passion she has for making my clients wedding day be the best day ever.
I am most proud of the ways that I can give back in my job, the destination weddings that I have received and the amount of clients that keep coming back to me.
I believe what sets me apart from other photographers, is I do not limit the amount of photos given back. I also do set to a strict time schedule when I am with a client. I understand kids can get upset, or a wedding day can get behind, and I am more than happy to be flexible.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I personally really love using Instagram and Facebook. Those are the best ways for clients to find me, and I also love looking at other photographers work on those apps. Some people might get imposter syndrome doing that, but I find it inspiring. Photography is art, and everyones art is completely different, I just love what each of us can create and share that with the world.
