Conversations with Julie Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Davis.

Hi Julie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have always been the “picture taker” in my family. I was the one that wanted everyone to get together at every event and say “cheese.” I purchased my first “real ” camera in 2018 and I really thought by buying this camera, I would magically be a great photographer. I was discouraged when my pictures looked the same as they always had. After hiring a photographer to take some family photos that I felt I could do better a job at, I dived into learning everything I could about photography. I bought books, signed up for a free online class called A Year With My Camera. After that year was up, I found Click, Love, Grow online. It is an online photography course based out of Australia and is exclusively for women. I took their beginner and advanced courses and also some workshops. I learned a ton from them! They offered feedback during these courses.

During the pandemic, I decided to take the plunge and make it into a business. I thought everyone would think I was crazy as I was 52 years old at that time! It has been pretty slow going in building my business, but I have been enjoying learning new genres. I photograph all kinds of things from families, kids, sporting teams and events, couples, product photography, and I even have 2 weddings under my belt. I’ve learned that High School Seniors are becoming my favorite and definitely something I want to do more of. I also really enjoy photographing my Grandkids as they grow! I also run a full-time residential and commercial cleaning business, so my time that I put into my photography has been limited by that. I’ve learned that you are never too old to learn something new!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My obstacles have been my current full-time job of running a residential and commercial cleaning business in a pandemic where I lost a lot of my workers and had to work more hours to keep up. I think doubting my abilities and comparing myself to other photographers has stopped me from going full speed ahead in making this a full-time business.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love to photograph high school seniors because they are so full of life and ready to get on with the next phase of their life, and unlike little kids, they pose the way you want! I also love photographing couples in love!!! I love, love, and I love capturing the connection between two people. It can be so magical! What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and my ability to find amazing natural backdrops for their photos.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel like I am a different person when I am behind my camera. I am typically a shy person, but behind the camera, I don’t mind telling my subjects what to do. I usually talk nonstop during a photo shoot, and I ask all kinds of questions to get them to feel more comfortable with me.
