Conversations with Jessica Dooley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Dooley.

Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a love for photography, but it was always me admiring and not doing. My personal journey with it really started when I became a mom.

I loved the idea of paying a photographer to take family portraits, but I was really craving a way to capture my family as they were – documenting the ordinary, everyday moments with them, and showing how special those things really were. Of course, I love the photos of everyone smiling at the camera, but my favorites were the pictures of baking in princess dresses and jumping on the couch in their underwear. Those were the real images of my children, the ones I wanted to keep forever.

I had a lot of people pushing me to start my business, but it wasn’t until this past year that I was able to take that leap and jump into it headfirst. Now I’ve been a part of countless love stories, milestones, and gatherings, and being able to share and document those moments never gets old.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has certainly not been a smooth road, but the biggest obstacle I faced was myself. My love for photography was there, I had support from friends and family, but my insecurities and self-doubt got the better of me.

I have always struggled with my mental health, and having confidence in my art and creativity is not something that comes naturally. I was constantly afraid of putting myself out there, letting others judge my work, and ultimately being told I wasn’t good enough. That fear made me avoid this business for a very long time, and still makes me shy away from opportunities occasionally, but therapy was a godsend.

I’m still a work in progress, but I’m learning to have more confidence in myself and be proud of the work that I’m creating, and I love the place I’m in right now.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Lifestyle, Elopement, and Intimate Weddings, photographer. I’ve also recently gotten into Boudoir, so I say I specialize in Love – Love for your family, love for your person, and love for yourself.

I’d say the thing I’m most known for, and proud of is being able to capture genuine emotion. We’re not going to sit still and pose for your family photos. We’re going to run, we’re going to play, and we’re going to laugh A lot.

I make it my mission to learn about each person, really build a relationship with every client I work with, and tell their unique story – because that’s what it is. A story. Every couple, family, or person I work with is unique. Their personalities, their stories, their love. No two are the same, and I pride myself on capturing them in the most authentic way.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Oh man, I feel like this is a loaded question!

I love this city so much. There’s literally something for everyone, and so much culture and diversity. We’ve got incredible parks, fantastic restaurants, art, and festivals. the list just goes on!

I think the thing I like least about our city is literally that it’s a city. I grew up in the thumb, so part of me still longs for waking up in the country, being able to have whatever animals I want (I’m dying for chickens and a horse), and just living at a slower pace.
