Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Wingate.
Hi Heather, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello there! My journey with flowers began over two decades ago when right out of high school I heard about a floral design course in Chicago. Being an aesthetic person, and loving things inspired by nature, I attended and completed the class over that summer. Shortly after, I received my first job as a floral designer at a local floral shop. I learned so much working hands-on there and found it was my passion to design with flowers.
After being married and staying home with our four children until the youngest was in school, I tried other career options but actually ended up returning to the same flower shop many years later. There I made everyday arrangements for funerals, weddings, proms, and events. Returning awoke my love for flowers and design.
My career took a turn when I was asked to make the floral arrangements for a friend’s wedding. Sharing the intimate experience with her and her family, and seeing the purpose of my work, brought me a level of happiness that inspired me to take a big step and venture out on my own.
I started my own boutique flower shop out of my garage and purchased a cooler, then went on to purchase a second larger cooler. I’ve recreated a flower shop with counter-space, floral tools, and chemicals for processing and caring for the flowers. I meet with potential Brides at my dining table and discuss their vision and dreams for their wedding. I love getting to know each one of their stories and enjoy making the dreams come true of their most special and intimate day. I am currently serving the local NW Indiana area and into lower Michigan for weddings and events that are in need of fresh flowers. I love making things beautiful with flowers, it is my joy and my passion.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Having started out in 2020, I experienced the lack of weddings and the unnerving question of whether the weddings we had planned would be able to proceed. I would say that almost everyone went on without any interruptions. I’ve also had to navigate the ordering process and find my way in a wholesaler’s world. Starting my own website and obtaining tax ID numbers as well as other Insurance add Ons are definitely not on my fun list. I’d much rather be creating and making things pretty. But I can say I’m very thankful things have gone so well and as I had hoped.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in making florals for Weddings and Events. I am known for my creativity with flowers and have recently been published in Architectural Digest Online Magazine for a floating arch I created that had over 358k views on TikTok @floramourfloraldesign I believe that my boutique style of being a wedding floral designer to just one client at a time, sets me apart from others. I like to take on one wedding per weekend to give all my focus and attention to my client’s special day.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would definitely say that asking for help along the way from every source I know, has helped me succeed. I have had friends with the knowledge that I didn’t obtain that got me through the marketing and media side of things. There has always seemed to be an answer out there. Following other groups of floral designers on social media has stepped up my game as well. I have even taken recent online classes to improve my skills and stay current. All those things together have gotten me where I am today.
