Conversations with D’Isjah Lyons

Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Isjah Lyons.

Hi D’Isjah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was 14 years old when I had my first photoshoot in my backyard with my 1-year God sister. My first shoot was not with a professional camera… It was with my LG G2 phone, ha ha. I posted the photos onto my Facebook and the feedback I got from family and friends overflowed me. I felt AMAZING and so proud of my work!

Later that year when I was given a small point-and-shoot camera, I spent HOURS upon HOURS of my day shooting anything I could find. Flowers, grass blades, rock piles – my family, you name it, I was there shooting it.

In 2016 I started my business Alluring Photography as a 16-year-old – I had few bookings for the year and gave up because I didn’t truly believe in myself.

Even years later when I bought my first DSLR (my pride and JOY), I didn’t picture myself as a wedding photographer. I deeply loved photography, yes, but capturing a wedding day?! That was for professionals. People who had all the right equipment, experience, and creative drive. (Ummm younger Dee, oh how you were mistaken about this one) A wedding photographer? Maybe in 5 years? But not – now.

It started with a simple prayer, ” God, give me purpose and direction.” And I watched in awe as God opened door after door allowing me to capture such precious moments in people’s lives. My heart and soul were poured into learning; late nights studying new techniques + editing and re-editing. Oh, how I didn’t expect to be here right now, and I’m so grateful. I’m PASSIONATE about capturing God-given love and documenting real-life fairy tales.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. I have had many ups and downs with my business. At times, I felt like I was on the verge of quitting photography entirely. Owning a business is not only hard, it’s mentally hard. Definitely when you are putting your all in your business and it seems you’re not moving an inch higher to your version of success.

I promised myself in 2020 that I will not give up again on my pride and joy.

Because I was sick of the old me throwing in the towel when I felt I wasn’t the best or unworthy of bookings.

One of my biggest struggles is truly believing in myself; it’s a day-to-day task. But I know one thing for sure that when you work hard and you don’t give up you will reach the stars. Our dreams may seem so unattainable at times but once you take that first step it becomes closer.

One of my favorite quotes is “You will only fail when you give up on yourself.”

What I have learned from my struggles are – your story is different from others – be patient with yourself, self-care is very important, boundaries for your time are important, Having God in your life is important, work life and family + friend balance is important.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am D’Isjah Lyons, a photographer based in Detroit, Michigan. I specialize in weddings and engagements.

I am known for being my true self through my content and editing style.

I am in love with brown and romantic edits.

I am most proud of how far my business has progressed. When I first started my business, I was a shy teenager, but now I am completely out of that shy box.

I believe my personality and my affection for my clients distinguish me. Creating a loving and safe environment is extremely important to me. I want my clients to feel as at ease as possible.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
If you’re looking for a mentor, I’d recommend starting with someone you admire or want your business model to be similar to.

Meeting friends in your niche is very simple; I would start by using hashtags for your area and niche. Send them a DM and start a conversation, or set up a coffee date!

Pricing:

  • Weddings Starting at – $1,200
  • Engagements Starting at – $350
