Conversations with Daniel Flynn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Flynn.

Hi Daniel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Act Casual got its beginnings in the spring of 2016 with Ryan Yoskovich on drums, Ryan Stafford on keys and sax, Will Richardson on guitar, Nick Small on guitar and vocals, and myself, Danny Flynn on bass. We had already been friends for several years and played separately in different outfits; however, this formation seemed to have a special spark and serious potential. We decided on the name Act Casual and threw a house party in the summer of 2016 which kicked off six years of playing house parties, weddings, music festivals, bars, clubs, and unforgettable experiences. Nick Small bowed out in the spring of 2019, and Ryan Yoskovich recently left earlier this year. We have since brought Justin Tullius on board who is a killer drummer and has brought a breath of fresh air to the group.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have faced many obstacles, including canceled gigs, bounced checks, personnel changes, broken down vans, empty rooms, dirty hotels, angry sound techs, and shady promoters. However, at the end of the day, each challenge presents us with an opportunity to adapt and learn in order to grow and avoid those pitfalls in the future. It also helps to have a somewhat laissez-faire attitude in certain circumstances, as many obstacles are out of your control and are better faced with a laugh than a frown.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We bring an eclectic mix of styles and influences to our sound, ranging from jazz, rock, funk, prog, blues, hip-hop, EDM, R&B, etc. We are known for our high-energy dance tunes, our long psychedelic jams, our tight-knit funk, and pop songs, as well as our “casual” attitude and demeanor. We are most proud of our appearance in Rolling Stone, our performance at the 2019 Bernie Sanders rally in Michigan, and our persistence in the face of hardship. We like to think our unique blend of influences and our style of improvised playing/jamming sets us apart.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
We are currently looking for a graphic artist to work with regularly on flyers and social media graphics etc. However, any other inquiries can also be sent to
