Community Highlights: Meet Tyra Williams of Mind Your Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyra Williams.

Hi Tyra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a lifelong athlete, I have always been involved in exercise. I played basketball and volleyball during high school and was exceptional at both. I chose to pursue basketball and continued to develop my skills until I was recruited to play college basketball. I chose to continue my athletic and academic career at Aquinas College where I played all four years on the Women’s basketball team. During my time at Aquinas, I experienced cognitive and emotional stress as I adjusted to my new reality as a collegiate athlete.

To protect my mental health, I shifted my focus from the court to the weight room. I realized that even though my experiences, at that time, were out of my control, I was able to use the weight room to feel and become stronger.

After I graduated from Aquinas in 2019, I developed a personal routine that supported my goal to stay active as I began my professional career. I didn’t want my athletic ability to deteriorate as I navigated my life post-graduation, so I made it a point

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the main struggles was balancing multiple responsibilities—juggling school, work, business, and personal life while pursuing a master’s degree in clinical social work was tough. At times, it felt overwhelming, especially working full-time as a Youth Advocate at an elementary school and training clients as a certified personal trainer. I had to constantly adapt, manage stress, and maintain focus on my long-term goals, even when things felt chaotic.

Another challenge has been navigating my identity and experience as a non-white practitioner in predominantly white spaces, especially as I work toward building a unique practice that integrates fitness and mental health counseling. I’ve had to push through moments of self-doubt and imposter syndrome, often being one of the few who looks like me in this field.

My business, Mind Your Fitness, is rooted in the idea of blending physical fitness with mental wellness, focusing on helping individuals achieve balance in both their bodies and minds. What sets us apart is our integrative approach—combining fitness training with mental health practices. As a NASM-certified personal trainer and soon-to-be licensed clinical social worker, I offer a unique perspective that bridges the gap between mental health and physical well-being.

At Mind Your Fitness, we specialize in creating personalized fitness programs that are mindful of each client’s mental and emotional needs. This means we don’t just focus on physical transformation, but also on how exercise can be a tool for managing stress, improving mental clarity, and enhancing overall well-being. One of the things we’re known for is offering customized mobility plans that target physical movement while also fostering mindfulness and self-care.
