Community Highlights: Meet Misty Gaerte of Misty Fields Pet Resort

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Gaerte.

Hi Misty, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I, Misty Gaerte, have loved animals (dogs and horses being my heart animals) since a little girl. Went to school to be a Vet Tech, got 3/4 way through, and started realizing that the heartaches that come along with this field would burn me out quickly. I worked in banking for 20 years, met Mike in 2018, and found out he loves animals too, he sold his Fire Protection business, and we both took a leap of faith, bought this farm, and put our blood, sweat, and tears into making a business where we could care for others pets.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part was learning, from scratch, how to run a business like this. I have a vast knowledge base in regards to dogs and horses, but the learning curve for the technical (taxes, HR, administrative) has proven tricky, especially when learning as we go.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We offer dog and cat boarding, and we are actually boarding a couple of horses now (in addition to our 2 full-size horses and 3 mini horses). We have Daycare for Doggo (half and full-day daycare for the pups), and I also have been pretty busy grooming dogs lately as well. Grooming dogs was something I always wanted to do since I was little, did not have much confidence, but all of our gracious customers have let me use their pups as learning tools while I teach myself how to groom, and they in turn get a fresh and clean pup at less cost (at least while I work on perfecting my grooming techniques) has really helped me realize that this old dog can learn new tricks!

We have an “In Our Home” boarding option, which has been a particular favorite with the clients who want their pups to be in a loving home vs in our barn kennels. The dogs that board in our home are treated as one of our own pups and sleep where they want to, go out to play with the others, etc.

Our barn kennel pups are walked around the property to sniff out all lithely can a couple of times a day, and we let the ones that are friendly with others out during daycare to play with other dogs.

Kitties that board with us stay in our purple cat room and get to pick from furniture to lounge on; we also have a catio on our deck so the kitties can enjoy some safe outdoor time on nice days.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
We were going to start up the business in 2020, but 2020 happened, and we were not comfortable with starting a brand-new business during a global pandemic, so we held off until July 1, 2021, to open our doors.
