Community Highlights: Meet Hillary Howell of Apothecary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary Howell.

Hi Hillary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Founded in 2018 by myself, Hillary Howell, PharmD, Apothecary&Company has come to be a reality after my husband, James, was diagnosed with an extremely rare, incurable cancer, leiomyosarcoma. With this diagnoses, James and I made the difficult choice to treat the aggressive cancer holistically hoping to increase his odds to 30-40% versus the 5-10% with traditional chemotherapy and radiation. Being a pharmacist for the past 15 years, I knew this was going to be a risky endeavor, however, it was a risk that James and I were compelled to take. James was treated holistically with supplements, vitamins, infra-red sauna, diet, IV vitamin therapy, reiki, meditation, among many other treatments. Ultimately James made the choice to go to Mexico and California to the world-renowned Issels Medical Center for immunotherapy. Sadly, James lost his “battle” with cancer in May of 2018. During our journey, my interest in alternative medicine heightened, and I decided to pursue my own business, incorporating what we had learned. I was more dedicated and determined than ever to guide and consult more patients with illnesses such as James who are interested in the prevention side of health and wellness. In honor of my late husband, James, Apothecary& Co proudly opened its door in July 2019. Over time, we have grown to where we are today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening 6 months prior to the COVID pandemic, building a new business has been a struggle. We are so very blessed that we still have our door open today. In 2021, the main highway (M-24) in front of the store was closed for many months and then again for a short time in 2022.

As you know, we’re big fans of Apothecary & Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
