Today we’d like to introduce you to Habtewold Dadi.
Hi Habtewold, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story began long before I became involved with Blue Nile. I grew up in a culture where food was never just food — it was love, hospitality, community, and connection. My father was known for welcoming people into our home, hosting gatherings, feeding guests, and making everyone feel cared for. I grew up watching that. I saw how powerful it was to bring people together around a meal, and those values stayed with me throughout my life. I always had a passion for culinary arts, hosting, and serving people. Even before Blue Nile became part of my journey, hospitality was already part of who I was. I enjoyed the idea of creating an experience for others not just serving a plate of food, but making people feel welcome, respected, and at home. Blue Nile itself was started by Seifu Lessanework, who brought Ethiopian food, culture, and tradition to the restaurant world in Michigan. His vision was to introduce people to the beauty of Ethiopian cuisine and create a place where guests could experience the warmth of our culture. My own connection to Blue Nile began in a very personal way. At the time, I was traveling for work and would visit Blue Nile in Detroit. During one of those visits, I noticed a beautiful woman working at the restaurant. I kept coming back, and over time, that beautiful woman became my wife. Through her, through the family, and through my own passion for hospitality, I became deeply connected to Blue Nile.
What started as visits to a restaurant became a lifelong journey of family, culture, food, and service. Over the years, I became part of carrying the Blue Nile legacy forward welcoming guests, sharing Ethiopian traditions, and creating an experience that is about more than dining. It is about community. Where I am today is the result of faith, family, hard work, and the values I was raised with. I believe when people come into our restaurant, they should feel the same warmth I saw growing up in my father’s home: a table full of food, a welcoming spirit, and a sense that everyone belongs. That is the heart of my story, and that is the heart of Blue Nile.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. Like many family-owned restaurants, Blue Nile has faced its share of challenges over the years. Running a restaurant requires consistency, patience, and the ability to adjust when things do not go as planned. One of the biggest challenges came during the pandemic. Blue Nile has always been built around connection, gathering, and the experience of sharing Ethiopian food together. When restrictions were put in place and people could no longer dine in the same way, it had a major impact on the business. The restaurant had to navigate fewer guests, uncertainty, staffing challenges, rising costs, and the pressure of keeping the business going during a difficult time. It was not easy, but Blue Nile adapted. The team leaned on takeout, loyal customers, community support, and the strength of the restaurant’s reputation. Many customers continued to support the business because Blue Nile had become more than just a place to eat it was a place connected to memories, culture, and community. Those challenges taught us how important it is to be flexible and resilient. The pandemic forced the business to adjust, but it also showed how strong the Blue Nile community truly is. Through hard work, loyal support, and a commitment to hospitality, Blue Nile was able to keep moving forward and continue serving the community.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant ?
Blue Nile is more than a restaurant it is an Ethiopian dining experience built around culture, hospitality, and community. We specialize in authentic Ethiopian cuisine, served in a way that brings people together. From our injera and flavorful stews to our vegetarian feast, meat dishes, Ethiopian coffee, tea, and honey wine, every part of the experience is meant to introduce guests to the richness of Ethiopian food and tradition. What Blue Nile is known for is the experience of communal dining. In Ethiopian culture, food is often shared from one platter, and that style of dining creates connection. Guests are not just coming in to eat; they are coming in to experience a tradition that encourages conversation, sharing, and togetherness. That is something that sets us apart from many other restaurants. We are also known for our warm hospitality. From the moment guests walk in, we want them to feel welcomed, cared for, and comfortable — whether it is their first time trying Ethiopian food or they have been coming to Blue Nile for years. We take pride in explaining the dishes, helping guests choose what to order, and making the experience memorable. What sets Blue Nile apart is the combination of authentic Ethiopian flavors, cultural storytelling, and a deep commitment to service. We are proud to have introduced so many people to Ethiopian cuisine and to have become a place where families, students, professionals, visitors, and longtime customers can gather. Brand-wise, we are most proud of the legacy and trust Blue Nile has built over the years. The restaurant has become part of people’s memories first dates, family dinners, celebrations, university visits, birthdays, and special gatherings. That means a lot to us. What we want readers to know is that Blue Nile is not just about food. It is about culture, connection, and hospitality. Whether someone comes in for our vegetarian feast, doro wat, lamb, spicy beef, Ethiopian tea, honey wine, or coffee, our goal is always the same: to make them feel welcomed and to give them an experience they will remember.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
No success happens alone, and Blue Nile’s story is no different. There are many people who deserve credit for helping shape the business and keep it going over the years. First, credit goes to Seifu Lessanework, who started Blue Nile and had the vision to introduce Ethiopian food, culture, and hospitality to the community. His work laid the foundation for what Blue Nile became not just a restaurant, but a cultural experience. I also give a lot of credit to my wife, Almaz Lessanework. Her dedication, strength, and incredible work ethic have played a major role in the success of Blue Nile. A family-owned restaurant takes sacrifice, patience, and teamwork, and I am grateful for everyone who has helped carry the vision forward.
Our staff also deserves recognition. Our chef, who has been with us for over 20 years, has been a huge part of our consistency and success. His ability to prepare authentic Ethiopian food with care and quality is one of the reasons customers continue to return. Our servers, hosts, kitchen team, and support staff also play an important role. They welcome guests, prepare the restaurant, serve with care, clean, and show up every day to help create the full Blue Nile experience. In a restaurant, every person matters. The food, the service, and the atmosphere all depend on a strong team.
Most importantly, we give credit to our customers and the community. Blue Nile has been supported by loyal guests, students, families, visitors, and people who have continued to come back year after year. Some guests came in for the first time knowing very little about Ethiopian food and later became regulars. Others have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and special moments with us. Their support, encouragement, and word-of-mouth have helped Blue Nile continue to grow and remain part of the community. So many people have played a role in this journey family, staff, loyal customers, and the wider community. Blue Nile’s success is truly a shared story.
