Check Out Shacarra Bennett-Hardy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shacarra Bennett-Hardy.

Hi Shacarra, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi! I’m Shacarra Bennett-Hardy. Detroit, MI (Eastside) born and raised, however, I’m currently residing in Dallas, TX, but I’m always visiting home. When I was in high school, I would try to wear a little makeup. Just one or two eyeshadows, nothing major, but when I got to college, I tried to really step it up. I attended Alabama A&M University where I received my bachelor’s degree in Social Work. I remember one summer while home from school I was working part-time and taking one online class. As you can probably already tell it was a very boring summer for me, but I found excitement in YouTube! Since I was trying to step up my makeup game, I would search for different techniques and ran into 3 YouTubers I was very fascinated with: MakeupShayla, Jackie Aina, and Aaliyah Jay. Any products they used in their videos, I bought it! I would watch their videos faithfully and practiced every day. When I returned to school I would practice on my friends, being a makeup artist then became my thing. After graduating I moved back to Detroit where I began working at a popular makeup store and working under my mentor, celebrity makeup artist, Danny B. Danny helped me out a lot! From taking me on events with her to showing me different techniques, I learned so much. Working at the makeup store also gave me knowledge on skincare and makeup. I began blogging and writing about different beauty products I was using/ trying out. I expressed to my manager at the time I was realIy thinking about starting a YouTube channel. I remember my manager telling me “No, you don’t want to do that. It’s going to be played out soon”. She was someone I looked at as being very knowledgeable, so I took her advice. I eventually moved back to Alabama (Birmingham) where a lot of my family resides. I then started working under my other mentor, my big cousin Coco, who is a huge makeup artist there. She took me on a lot of events as well, I would assist her, and she taught me the business side of being a makeup artist. A couple of years go by and unfortunately, COVID hit. My husband and I relocated to Dallas, and while in quarantine we had so much time on our hands. I got back to watching YouTube videos consistently and made the decision to finally start my channel! I now have gotten a chance to work with different brands, make extra income, all while expressing and enjoying myself. Haven’t looked back since!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to being a beauty influencer has not been smooth at all. I think the biggest struggle is being consistent, which is also the key to success. What makes consistency such a struggle is most of us get distracted by everyday life. It is so easy to procrastinate, then realize it’s been weeks since you put in any work! Accountability has helped me overcome this. I hold myself accountable when I do not see the results I want. That motivates me even more. I’m also grateful for my support team, my family, they hold me accountable as well.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for my talented makeup skills, my knowledge in skincare, my fashion sense, and my goofy personality that shows in my videos. I’m so proud of myself that I did not give up on my goal. I thought the beauty influencer industry was too saturated and no one would be interested in watching me. So glad I was wrong! I’m me and that’s what sets me aside from others.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Although it may look like I made it, I’m honestly still pushing towards goals. My overall goal is to be a huge influencer where I have a positive impact on women and little girls. I want to be their beauty guide and show them it’s more than just what’s on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside too! And I believe YouTube has been the perfect platform for me to do so. I definitely appreciate all the brands I’ve worked with thus far and excited for the many I’ll work with in the future. I also want to take time to thank God most importantly for putting me in this position and giving me this platform because without Him nothing is possible. I thank my husband, EJ Hardy, my parents, siblings, friends, and my sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for being such an amazing support system.
