Check Out Portia Powell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Portia Powell

Portia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in financial services my first semester home from college. My mom forced me to get a job because I came home with credit card debt and I started working as a part time teller and 20 years later I’m the CEO of One Detroit Credit Union. I have done everything there is in financial services from retail, investments, commercial lending, municipal banking to now leading a Credit Union.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I experienced growth at a young age and had reached management by the time I was 21. My biggest challenge was proving myself to an older generation of people that questioned me because of my age. I have always led with my work ethic and let my results shine. I also was a young mom and as I was trying to grow professionally I also had a developing daughter and had to develop relationships and a career path that allowed me the flexibility to be a great mom. Overtime I built rapport with my organizations who recognized my daughter as an extension of me and she has been embedded in my journey of growth.
