Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Jakub
Hi Natalie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I first became passionate about environmental issues during my college years at Eastern Michigan University, where I was actively involved with an organization called GREEN. After graduating, I started my career at Energy Works Michigan in Ann Arbor, focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy programs for schools. Unfortunately, the organization closed due to funding challenges, which led me to pursue a master’s degree in Eco-Justice and Education at EMU.
During this time, I discovered Green Living Science through an AmeriCorps VISTA position. I spent two years in that role, deeply connecting with the organization’s mission. Since 2013, I’ve been fortunate to continue my journey with Green Living Science, where I’ve grown professionally and personally, driven by my dedication to environmental education and sustainability.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. After losing funding at my first job, I worked at Just Baked Cupcakes and a mortgage company before finding my way back to my true passion. Since joining Green Living Science, we’ve faced staffing changes, staffing losses, a pandemic, and shifts in funding. Each challenge pushed us to adapt and grow, and now, we’re stronger than ever. It’s been a journey of resilience, but our commitment to sustainability and education has kept us moving forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Green Living Science, I lead efforts to educate and empower Detroit communities to adopt sustainable practices, with a focus on waste reduction and recycling. As the Executive Director, I specialize in developing programs that make environmental education accessible and actionable for schools, businesses, and residents. I’m also a certified TRUE Advisor, helping facilities achieve zero waste.
I’m most proud of how we’ve grown as an organization, despite challenges like funding shifts and the pandemic. We’ve expanded our reach, engaged more residents in recycling, and built partnerships that make a lasting impact. What sets us apart is our hands-on, community-driven approach—meeting people where they are and making sustainability realistic and achievable for everyone.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue growing and expanding recycling access so more people have the opportunity to participate in sustainability efforts. One of our biggest dreams is to open a zero-waste education center in Detroit—a space where people can learn hands-on about waste reduction, circular economy practices, and how their daily actions impact the environment. We’re also committed to helping individuals and communities make the connection between environmental issues, their health, and local ecosystems. By deepening awareness and providing practical solutions, we hope to create lasting change for a more sustainable Detroit.
