Check Out Mona Hardas’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mona Hardas.

Hi Mona, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been passionate about women’s health hence after finishing my medical school choosing OB/GYN as a specialty was an obvious choice. I have been working in women’s health since 1999 when I graduated from the residency program and received my board certification in OB/GYN. Starting at the beginning of my career I started encountering women who were suffering from conditions for which I have received very little to no training in my residency. For example women with excessive skin of the labia which was causing friction and pain , irregular size and length of the labia , changes from child birth causing scarring , wider vagina as well urinary incontinence , perimenopausal and menopausal changes in the genital area to name the few. The tipping point was I had few patients who unfortunately in their child hood female circumcision ( Female genital mutilation ) and were looking for reconstruction. This made me seek avenues to get more training so I can help my patients. I did masters degree as well as fellowship in cosmetic gynecology surgery. I attended numerous workshops, cadaver dissention and hands on training to reach where I ‘m today . I’m very happy and excited to help with the issues which women suffer in silence. These treatments are aimed at restoring the anatomy , alleviate their suffering and give them self confidence.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Women suffer in silence because it is such a taboo to talk about anything to do with genital area. People don’t even say the word vagina !! No one thinks twice about talking about breast augmentation or Buttock augmentation but somehow they are ashamed of talking about vagina or vulva. It is just a part of your body. Getting over this hurdle has been the toughest. With internet and social media it is getting better as the word is spreading. Women need to know that they do not need to suffer in silence. If something is bothering you and causing suffering – mental or physical then please talk to your doctor and get help.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a cosmetic Gynecologist. It is a bit of a misnomer as the word cosmetic means only beauty . Of course I help in making the body part look good but also help in restoring the normal anatomy, resolving the functional issues and resolving the pain. My procedures are both surgical and non surgical depending on the clinical findings. The treatment will range from hormone replacement to laser vaginal rejuvenation to surgical corrections like labiaplasty, vaginoplasty , vaginal reconstruction , labia fat transfer etc.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’m a very outgoing , friendly person. Always been interested in sports, outdoor activities like hiking , biking etc. I love arts and painting is one of my hobby. I enjoy working out as well as yoga. I like cooking and gathering friends and family and cooking for them as well.
