Check Out Meghan Baker’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Baker.

Meghan Baker

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ever since I was a little girl, I started collecting antiques and I would make my mom stop on the way up to our cottage up North.

Fast forward 20 years & a huge life change later, I decided to rent out my 1969 chalet that is designed with all of the vintage decor I’ve collected. And then it continued with my Mom’s 125+ year old cabin that we started renting out and so on.

Then, this turned into me setting up airbnbs, doing interior design based around my antiques, selling my antiques at pop up shops, and so on!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Just like with any business, there are ups and downs along the way, figuring out what renters want is something I’ve gathered a lot of knowledge about through trial and error.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Great Lakes Modern specializes in interior design featuring hand picked antiques to make a space look “period appropriate” to look classic Northern Michigan. I try to create a “nostalgic experience” through my spaces that make you feel like you took a step back in time. I create this by using anything vintage, games, books, decor to create this vibe.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think networking is one of our greatest assets today with all of social media and platforms we have today.
I have met and created so many new friendships along the way through renting and interior design and similar interests. I think if we all help each out, it creates a web that just continues to trickle⚡️
