Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamison Borden
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I graduated from high school in June of 2022. I didn’t really like school so I didn’t have any plans of going to college right away. I loved track and field and ran that all four years of my high school sports career, so after I graduated I looked around the Milwaukee area to find a club team I could join.
I followed a Norwegian sprinter on YouTube who made videos documenting his training and track journey. I was inspired to do the same, so I started looking into some cheaper video equipment I could purchase to make some quality videos for my YouTube channel.
My track journey was not going super well at the time as I kept dealing with different injuries. As much as I am someone who likes to push through adversity, after a few months of the injuries persisting, I decided to stop running for the track club. During my search for video equipment, however, I got some video recommendations on how to make money with a camera. By the fall of 2022, I bought a course on filmmaking and began to work through all of the content within in. By November of 2022, I bought my first camera, lens, and lighting equipment to start putting my knowledge to use.
After a few months, I had some good practice and knowledge under my belt, but nothing to put in my portfolio. Someone I had met in the gym in the winter of 2022 told me he was getting married across the world in Mexico.
I took a week to think about it, then decided this could be a great experience for me. In March of 2023, at 18 years old, I flew to Mexico by myself and shot my first wedding. I had no clue what I was doing, but much of the creative industry is just doing as you go and running with what feels good.
I delivered that wedding film in the summer, the couple loved it and got me some referrals to other couples who were getting married soon. I shot some more weddings throughout the summer and eventually got in at an agency as a contractor, landing more consistent work.
This lasted throughout early 2024 until I finally was able to make the jump and go full-time in video production. I joined a startup in the Milwaukee area that was centered on real estate photography and videography. As of late we have gone through a transition to start taking on more big commercial projects. Working in a startup is very demanding but rewarding. While there are a lot of growing pains ahead, I’m confident that myself alongside the rest of the 7 guys on the team can craft something truly special for ourselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggles that I’ve encountered are imposter syndrome, and having the confidence to communicate with authority. Directing people for photo and video work can be tricky, and I’ve learned that just communicating with authority (even when you may not always know what you’re doing) makes both the client and myself feel more confident in my abilities as a creative.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
On the team that I’m a part of, I’m most well-known for being an FPV drone pilot. FPV quads are a type of drone that are incredibly difficult to fly as they require a different type of controller inputs than a typical camera drone. The kinds of shots you can get with them are truly unique, and the adrenaline rush you get when flying one of these is pretty stressful, but also puts you in a state of intense focus, which I love.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was going to Ireland with my Mom’s side of her family when I was 14 years old. This sparked my love for travel, and I’m excited to say I’m solo traveling back to Ireland at the age of 20 in March of this year. Super excited to see what I find over there.
