Check Out Cody Contratto’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Contratto. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Curly Mayhem Wood Products started in 2018 by Cody Contratto “Mayhem” and Carl Morris “Curly” where they met from the sale of 12′ x 44” wide maple live edge slab. This maple slab sparked the conversation about milling large felled trees with a Stihl MS 880 chainsaw and a 60″ Granberg Alaskan Mill. Both had the same passion for woodworking and milling logs and this planted the seed for a future business and friend, bringing Curly Mayhem Wood Products to life. Together we bring over 40 years of experience to Curly Mayhem.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been easy and together we’ve put in endless hours to get where we are today and still have so much farther to go with new obstacles and challenges every day. Carl and I have been fortunate to start off Curly Mayhem Wood Products in our 40’x80′ pole barn and 10 acres of land allowing us to work on multiple projects at a time and storing logs but as we continue to grow the space has quickly ran out. Part of the challenge when working with live edge slabs is the space needed to store them, keeping inventory on hand and inventory for future clients to select from. Live edge wood slabs that range in size up to 14’x44′ quickly fill up a shop, leaving very little room to work. Another challenge we face today is deciding when is the right time to start adding employees. We’re usually booked 6-8 weeks out, which has worked well for us but with us looking to grow we’re wanting to cut that time in half on custom work and expanding into other areas of the industry.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Curly Mayhem Wood Products is a small sawmill where we offer milling and kiln drying services, and we pride ourselves on quality and uniquely crafted handmade furniture. We currently specialize in custom live edge tables and countertops and are looking to expand our services into trim, fencing, and beams.

Carl and I are most proud of the business we’ve built from just our passion for woodworking and craftsmanship. Every day we look to increase our knowledge of woodworking, rather it be traditional joinery, resin tables, or inlays, we enjoy it all.

What sets Curly Mayhem apart from others is the collection of services we offer to our customers all under one roof. Our goal is to be your one-stop shop when looking to get a hand-crafted table. What this means is if you have a tree that you have taken down in your yard and has been a part of your life for the last 40 years and hate to see it go…. we can help! We will pick up the tree from your yard once felled, mill it into dimensional or live edge wood, kiln dry it in one of our 3 Nyle kilns, and lastly turn it into beautiful 1 of a kind heirloom furniture of your preference. Offering all these services under our one-room turning tree into tables is why we love what we do.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
There are many resources we utilize that help us do our best and keep growing from mentors to Youtube to podcasts. I’d be lying if I said some of what we do is not influenced by social media like Facebook and Instagram but the truth is there is a lot of great content on those platforms and a great way to connect and meet individuals who have the same passion as you. The best part is the woodworking community you get to be involved in and the friendships you get to build.
