Check Out Bobby Garrett III’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Garrett III.  

Hi Bobby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My unofficial start was in 2016. I was working at a Children’s clothing/custom printing store in Bloomfield Township, MI. I started with 1 design that I posted to my social media accounts and a few of my friends/family members placed pre-orders. I took those orders fulfilled them and made 24 more. Things slowed down throughout 2017 but in 2018 I printed two new designs on some hoodies for myself. It was a Detroit design and a Young, Black, and Gifted design, they both sold really well. Friends, Family, and strangers all liked those designs. 2018 was my official start with my brand and the name Royal Lineage Apparel. I started with 100 shirts that I sold for $5.00 each. The shirts were given to me by my cousin stays who stays in New York. It’s 2022 now and I have moved on to get my own screen-printing equipment, launched my website in 2020, and expanded my items into women’s clothing with goals to do children’s clothing soon. 

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Of course not. The road has been extremely rough. The way I’ve been navigating the entrepreneurial space is definitely with a “Guerilla Warfare” mindset. I don’t have any formal training or education in business or fashion. Having to navigate this new space has been tough but it’s definitely getting easier. With the more I learn and experience, I can add it to my Rolodex of information to call back to. But at the end of the day no matter how hard the road has been, it’s been very satisfying. 

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Royal Lineage Apparel is a unisex clothing brand. We specialize in Streetwear/Urban Fashion. Clothing-wise, what we are known for is our signature Logo hoodie. They come in a wide variety of colors but they are all printed with our signature gold. A lot of our women customers really love our logo leggings. One of my most recent items is my “Black Excellence” tribal hoodies. This hoodie was the first time I could call myself a “fashion designer”. I contracted a seamstress to sew the African wax print fabric in the hood and on the pocket of all the hoodies. What sets Royal Lineage Apparel apart from so many other brands is our mission to provide low-cost items that are still fashionable and high quality. We do have a few pieces in our catalog that are a little higher priced but for the most part. You can come to our site with $10.00 and order a great designed shirt, that’s high quality, looks good and you can be proud of. 

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a low-key teen, but I lived in sort of a double world. I was a nerd/geek but I loved playing basketball and other sports. I wasn’t a popular kid but I was well known. Too nerdy for the cool kids, not smart enough for the smart kids. I vividly remember playing Yugioh, the trading card game, on Saturday mornings with one group of kids for 2-3 hours and then going down the street and playing basketball for 2-3 hours with a whole different group of kids. This ultimately made me a more well-rounded person. I was able to see different perspectives of people. I was able to float in and out of different social circles. In school, I was a quiet kid. Stuck in a corner drawing somewhere.
