Check Out Ashley Cook’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Cook.

Hi Ashley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always loved candles. I felt that scented candles set a “mood” for me, they always made me feel relaxed, happy, or just gave my space that extra cozy feeling. One day, I decided to do research on how to make them, So I end up ordering what I needed, made some candles, and after they sat for some days, I sold some and got great feedback! After making my first batch, I thought about starting a business from home with my candles. I had many people tell me that my candles have so much potential. That made me feel good and confident about my products. As I was able to order more supplies, I made more candles. My business was finally legally formed as an LLC, and I was excited and ready to get the ball rolling. I sold my 2nd batch and received tons of support from some of my family, my coworkers, and even coworkers of my fiancé’s. I even started getting more support from social media, which is awesome!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running your own business is definitely not a smooth road. There are ups and downs to owning a business. I do everything from ordering supplies, making the candles, packaging, and shipping, running social media pages and creating marketing content and emails to send out. Also, making labels, keeping up with updating the website, checking emails, and keeping track of all of the business costs as well. There are times when I get no sales, and then I do. Learning how to target my audience on social media was a tricky thing for me when I first started. I can admit, my very first-time running Ads on social media, I was disappointed in not getting the results I hoped for. But I learned from the mistakes I was making.

I do get support from some family and friends just not what I expected, but some of my supporters have helped me push through times I felt I was on that rocky road. From the positive feedback and people posting my candles to their stories on social media, and to the positive amazing text messages telling me my candles helped them relax, or made their entire room smell so good. It makes me smile, and realize the potential and talent that I have. It can be draining sometimes doing everything on your own for your business, managing time, and having a weekly/monthly plan helps with keeping everything in order.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work in the medical field and I am a mother of 3 children. I love helping people, listening to others, and learning new things. I have always wanted to work as a medical professional since I was little. As of today, I do just that. I went to medical school and graduated in 2009. I had a hard time finding a job back then with me having no experience. I did not give up. I worked at a convenience store, and a fast-food place before I landed my first medical job. The more experience I got in the medical field, the better the jobs got. A lot of people see me as a nice person, a great listener, a fast learner, funny, hardworking, strong, and responsible.

I have been through many ups and downs in life, but nothing bad enough to take me out. I see myself as a strong woman. I am proud of myself for standing my ground against people that tried to bring me down, and negative life situations too. What sets me apart from others is that I am very determined, and I know what I want. No matter what negative situation come at me, I will look for positive outcomes and go for it.

What’s next?
I love making candles. It makes me feel happy, at peace and positive. It brings out my creative side, and I know that as I grow my company, I will need to get down to it and start hiring people to help. I would also love to get my candles inside Walmart and Target stores one day. I was walking through Target with my fiancé, and we walked past the candles. I stopped and smelled some and said, “these will be my candles sitting here on these shelves one day”. I even think about my own warehouse space to be able to make and distribute candles and have more storage space. Working from my basement is my current situation right now lol. With that being said, I have amazing, big plans for my candle business! Never give up on your dreams. Anyone can accomplish their goals if they really want to. Staying positive and motivated is the key.
