Check Out Ana Uddin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Uddin

Hi Ana , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Detroit, surrounded by a melting pot of culture and food. My parents immigrated to the US from Bangladesh in the 80s. They started their family in New Jersey, then relocated us to Michigan when I was a toddler, and I’ve been here ever since. I love Detroit and I think my passion for creativity, food and the arts was shaped by the environment I grew up in. From a young age, I was immersed in diverse flavors, traditions, and ways of storytelling, all of which left a lasting impact on me.

I went to school for marketing and earned my business degree during the height of the pandemic. Graduating and stepping into the real world during the chaos of the pandemic was overwhelming, and like many, I found myself in a constant state of fear and pressure. But in the midst of all that, I found my outlet: exploring. Whether it was discovering new restaurants, trying different activities, or experimenting with recipes at home, I found joy in the little things. Having extra time at home, I started to enjoy cooking new meals and making my own coffee. I’ve been hooked since then and I love incorporating new recipes into my daily routine.

As I continued to work from home, I saved up money and made it a priority to travel when restrictions were lifted. I took myself on trips to places I felt deeply connected to, like New Orleans and Rome, each experience deepening my love for food, art and history. One of my personal travel traditions is to visit a historical monument or museum in every place I go. Learning about the culture and history of different parts of the world has become one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journeys. Besides that, I really enjoy the dining experiences I’ve been exposed to in my travels – it’s pretty hard to beat hand spun pasta and fresh calamari.

Food has always been a big part of my life. I grew up in a family of foodies—our house was where all the neighborhood block parties and barbecues happened. If there’s one thing you should know about Bangladeshi American families, it’s that we take great pride in cooking our food with love. My grandmother, who played a pivotal role in raising me, would cook in massive pots to make sure there was always enough to feed everyone (and send them home with leftovers). Because of that, I developed a love for food from a young age, and I maintain that now.

Besides travel and food, I would say my sisters have played a huge role in shaping who I am. They introduced me to some of my favorite TV shows and movies, passed down their best hand-me-down clothes and shoes, and taught me how to cook the meals I still love today. Like many siblings, we didn’t always get along growing up, but as adults, we are closer than ever before. We also have a younger cousin who we always joke is our “fourth sister.” Having a strong, supportive group of women in my life has been such an important foundation for me. They keep me grounded and remind me of who I am, which I think is so important as you navigate adulthood, especially as a brown woman. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others or wonder how we can make ourselves stick out as unique. Something I’ve noticed over the years is that people spend so much time trying to become ‘someone’—chasing titles, expectations, or validation. But the truth is, who we are and what we do matters way more than who we think we should be. When we embrace ourselves fully and stop caring what the world has to say about it, the rest falls into place.

The reason why I don’t have a super templated format for my instagram posts is because I have a wide range of interests – anything from skincare, food, travel, coffee recipes. My page is like a digital diary for my friends to view and read. I’ve always loved capturing moments so that’s what inspired my “blogging era” as my friends call it. I know there’s a stereotype that younger generations are glued to their phones, but I believe you can live in the moment and still document it. I take photos and videos not just to post but to remember—to look back on where I’ve been, who I was with, and how far I’ve come. Lately, I’ve gotten into scrapbooking as a way to keep physical copies of my memories. My family has photo albums dating back to before I was born, and I’d love to have my own collection to possibly pass down one day, too.

My passion for sharing recommendations and reviews didn’t happen overnight. I used to post my quarantine life casually on my personal page, and over time, people would message me asking, “Where’d you get this?” or “Is that new drink any good?” or “Do you know if these ingredients are cruelty-free?” At some point, I realized there was genuine curiosity about the things I was posting, and I thought it’d be fun to create a space just for that—a page dedicated to sharing recommendations with the people who cared about seeing them. I never expected people to keep up with me, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many did and still do. What’s funny is that, in real life, I’ve never spoken to a lot of the people who follow my page. I post all the time and I seem very outgoing but the truth is I’m a little awkward and shy when it comes to starting conversations. I do enjoy being around people and getting to know them, so my page, in a way, has given me a space to connect with people in a way that feels natural to me.

For me, this recs and reviews blog is something I sincerely enjoy. I try not to take it too seriously and I want it to feel authentic. I’m just soaking up the fun of sharing snippets of my favorite things in life, and as long as it stays enjoyable, I’ll keep sharing.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’d say it’s been a smooth road for me when it comes to social media and having an online presence in general. I haven’t had any external issues or problems, but I do get in my own way. Very rarely, I experience moments where I wonder if I’m posting enough, if my content is fun enough, or if my posts are somehow annoying the people who see it on their feeds.

When that happens, I remind myself that I didn’t start my page as a way to keep someone’s attention or to get more followers. I started it with the intention to journal my favorite moments and places in life and to create a space for other people to find honest and genuine reviews and recommendations for products, places and experiences.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work in TV advertising! I took a new step in my career last year and I’m loving it so far. I specialize in marketing and business administration and I have worked in marketing for 6+ years. I think in the professional world, I’m known for my drive and my passion for creating. In previous roles, I’ve done email marketing, direct mail, paid search, social media, creative campaign management, field marketing research, and more. Throughout my career, the most consistent thing was staying curious. I never assume I’m the smartest person in the room and I ask lots of questions so I can absorb information like a sponge. I learn new things every day and even now, I’m amazed by how much marketing can do for a company or person.

In roles like the ones I’ve had, you have to be quick and willing to adapt. I think what I’m most proud of is my willingness to truly go with the flow. Some of the best projects of my career were the unexpected one-off requests that I was initially hesitant to take.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m less of a believer in luck and more of a believer in fate. I truly believe that what’s meant to be yours will be yours when the time is right. I believe that the universe helps you get to that point, but I don’t know if I’d call it good or bad luck. For example, I got into my dream university and ended up going somewhere else, but I graduated college completely debt free and landed several internships while I was in school. I also met some of my closest friends in college. It sounds cheesy but I do think that things happen for a reason and that you’ll always get to where you’re supposed to go.

As for my blogging days, I’m really excited to see how far I can go with anasrecsandreviews. Working with my favorite brands is on my to-do list this year and it’s important to me to always maintain my curiosity, genuine passion, and originality. I’m looking forward to all the cool things I’ll explore soon. 🙂
