Today we’d like to introduce you to Arthur Safarov.
Hi Arthur, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
As far back as I can remember I have been fascinated by photography. In my teens and twenties, I diligently studied photography techniques and learned under more experienced photographers. I worked for about ten years in my home country Uzbekistan before I moved to the United States in 2010 and have been working in Michigan ever since. I work for several companies as an independent contractor and I also get bookings via my social media and website.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road but it is one that I am very happy to be on. There are the basic things like keeping up with photo theory and technology that are essential. I think that is the nature of being an artist, there is always something new to learn, new skills to perfect.
I’ve also had to learn a lot about American culture and customs. In southeast Michigan, I have the pleasure of working with people from all walks of life and I quickly had to learn what is expected of me. What would make one client happy would be unacceptable to another. There can be a lot of nuances to work through. Then there is the fact that English isn’t my first language, and I have an accent, so sometimes clients are concerned that there will be a language barrier. I have found communication to be essential in easing these worries. I ask lots of questions and always encourage my clients to reach out and keep that communication going. I have to prove myself both as a photographer and as a person. I have to show that I have both the skills and the personality clients are looking for and that they can put their trust in me when they hire me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer. I dabble in all types of photography but my specialty is family photography, specifically weddings. I am known for my flexibility; I can do more experimental/creative shots and I can also do candid/documentary-style photos. I can also do anything in between. Basically, whatever the client wants I am able to do. I think that is what I am the most proud of. I am not locked into a specific style and I don’t place my vision above the clients. I think that is what sets me apart, I see my profession as a collaborative process. I really enjoy that aspect because people come up with ideas I never would have thought of, or they tell me about a new trend that they want to do, it makes it a lot of fun and I never know completely what to expect.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love to dance! I come from a culture with lots of dancing so it is close to my heart. I love being lost in music; it is such an incredible force of expression.
