Community Highlights: Meet Morgan Underwood of Ganja Girl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Underwood.

Hi Morgan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
In 2016 I experienced my first medical marijuana shop, where I was assisted in obtaining my medical marijuana caregiver card. As a caregiver, I was able to grow 72 cannabis plants for my 5 medical marijuana patients and myself. I had no prior experience with cultivation, but I dedicated myself to learning everything I could. From cutting the clones to curing the flower, I became completely obsessed with the plant. Along with cultivating, I also wanted to know how to make consistent, reliable cannabis products. So, I started baking edibles and making solventless concentrates at home in my kitchen. I learned everything from the internet and trial & error.

I was a caregiver for 6 years which allowed me time to experiment with the entire seed-to-jar process. At some point, people in the community started to call me “Ganja Girl” and so I just ran with it. I knew I wanted to continue my journey in the cannabis industry and build my brand even bigger by applying for a state-issued cannabis license.

In December 2021, I became the first woman of color in the city of Lansing to hold a cannabis license. Ganja Girl LLC is a licensed marijuana event organizer, and in addition to hosting immersive 420 experiences, we also offer brand merchandise on our website!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There have been countless hurdles and obstacles along the way, especially being a woman in such a male-dominated industry, but I have remained persistent.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our goal with Ganja Girl events is to showcase the very best of our local community! We are most proud of the community we have created that continues to grow each day!

We are proudly a bronze qualifier in the Social Equity All-Star Program, meaning we are committed to giving back to our community! We offer helpful resources, an online community, a mentorship program for local entrepreneurs, and more.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Lansing is…hands-down the people. Lansing will show up for small businesses, support the local folks, and celebrate together as one big extended family.

I would like to see more local ownership, more community investment, and more opportunities for local people!
