Meet Alexandra Kralova-Zender

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Kralova-Zender.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started sewing as a; little girl; being 4th generation of seamstress and designer, I was always surrounded by the sound of sewing machines. I went to study in Praque and got two degrees in Fashion design. After graduating, I knew I will need to speak English (I’m from Czech Republic), so I went to live in the UK to learn the language. After a year, I found a job for textile and fashion designer Sarah Arnett. I worked on bridal gowns and ready-to-wear and designed bridal accessories. After 6 years, I took a break and went live in a yoga ashram in the Bahamas, where I made clothes for the gods in the temple and met my husband. HE brought me to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and I started my own business. First, I went around festivals and art shows, then I had two children, and now I have studio in Marquette, and I’m working on my dream.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been smooth road because no matter how busy or how successful I’m I always loved what I do the same. My work is my sanctuary, place of peace.

The hard part is how to do it all having family. I have two children, so I had to wait when they both can go to school to have regular everyday time to do what I love. Now that I have that, my struggles are being one-woman show and finding a way how to do it all myself.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I especially in custom bridal gowns. I work exclusively with natural materials. Every gown so far is designed and made with and for customers. My customers are part of the designer process and get create their dress along the side with me.

Alright, so before we go, can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I always look for photographers, graphic designers, models, or performance artist to collaborate with. I love to get story and cause into my design or presentation. Bring more meaning into my work by supporting someone else’s passion.
