Daily Inspiration: Meet Becky Babcock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Babcock.

Hi Becky, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved taking photographs. Growing up, my older sister (who is my inspiration) used to set up plain sheets as a backdrop and dress us up to take surprise photos for our parents. I slowly followed in her footsteps. I was always documenting my friends’ adventures and quickly turning them into scrapbooks and making copies for others. There was something so rewarding about capturing the moment and sharing it.

Fast forward to my college days at Central Michigan University (CMU), long before cell phone cameras were a thing, I took an intro to Photography Journalism class with a film Nikon and quickly fell in love with the process. While I graduated with a degree in Integrative Public Relations, I have found that having this skill has set me apart from many in my industry. Every story I tell needs images to go with it.

I started taking my photography serious in 2014 after a falling out with a family member. I used this as my form of therapy. When I felt the world grippling at my fingertips and emotions running high, I picked up my camera and kept clicking. It’s important to capture the beauty of humans, and I love sharing that with others.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth roads do not exist. If everything was smooth, there would be no growth. I certainly have my patience tested all the time – but no matter what the situation is, myself and the client can always figure out a way to fix it.

The unwavering support I have had over the years, through struggles of juggling being a wife, mother, full-time career, and photography during my free time, is incredible.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I stumbled across a photo last year that changed my perception and business model. Written and posted by a respected photographer, it was an image of a dozen memory cards and said: “Your grandmother’s last hug is in the palm of our hands, literally.” That hit hard. It’s happened to me more than once that I’ve taken the last images of a grandparent, sibling, mother. And for that, I am grateful to have been trusted with so many of life’s precious moments and the really hard ones.

I think that’s why I have gained the trust of so many clients. I am a realist and sometimes, your babies just aren’t feeling it, but I capture it anyways. Almost always, those unplanned, ‘reality vs. Instagram’ images are usually some of the favorites.

Most of my shoots are family sessions, children’s milestones such as cake smashes and birthdays, and senior portraits. It brings me great joy to watch your families grow behind my lens. It’s an incredible journey.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Adaptation! For both my family and the ones I photograph. That’s been the best lesson for myself and my clients, and everyone is very understanding. Things can change on a quick second.
