Rising Stars: Meet Bhoomika Chauhan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bhoomika Chauhan.

Hi Bhoomika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Art and painting has been my hobby from childhood. I came to the US in 2011. I had a master’s degree in Organic chemistry from India but I needed to study more in the US in order to get a job. Sometimes I felt like I have spent many years studying, and getting my master’s degree is going to go in vain. But later, we were blessed with 2 beautiful girls in 4 years of time, and we were the happiest couple on the planet. We got a dream house in the metro Detroit area and made many friends after moving. One time my friend asked me to help her with the makeup for her client and Indian Saree draping. I went there just for fun and to get the experience. After that, I saw that the bride had a Henna ceremony, and I literally had a light bulb moment at that time. I was very fond of henna designs in my teenage years. I started using henna cones and applying them to friends and relatives on festivals, parties, and even casually back in India. This is just a hobby of mine turned into a passion as I took some henna classes and kept on learning and exploring more. I continued building on what I have been exposed to sharpen my skills. Sharing my henna work on Instagram invited customers. Increase in clients was a motivation to start my own henna business. I created a new business and named it Radhe Henna.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am not a native English speaker, and talking with people in English was a challenge earlier when I moved to the US. Initially, I had difficulty in understanding the accent and vocabulary frequently used here. I realized that I had no choice but to learn understanding and speaking. I started watching TV shows with subtitles, reading papers and articles online. At times I used to speak with my husband in English and other friends who were part of the region where I come from. I started talking to customer care for any issue I had and that certainly helped. Fast forward today, I own my business and talk to people every single day, and it feels amazing.

I knew that if I wanted to be successful at my henna business, I needed to reach out to the brides to be, since the bridal henna has those daintily and intricate designs. I continued to practice and improved my skills continuously in the meantime. After some time, I got the very first order, and the bride loved the henna design I created. So much so that she gave a lot of references to her friends and family, and I started getting recognized. After some advertisement, social media, and reference reviews, I am well recognized in the Metro Detroit area.

My advice to anyone getting started in any field is to take the plunge. Don’t procrastinate and take the steps to get started. Your adventure may fail, but you will get experience and exposure that will help you in future for sure. I firmly believe that our purpose as a human being is to continue to evolve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional henna artist serving the Metro Detroit area. I specialize in Bridal & Guest henna, Baby shower henna, Graduation parties, Belly art, and Henna crown. I am versatile in traditional and modern henna design and can also do the customized elements through beautiful pieces of henna art.

Natural henna is a beautiful, painless, temporary, and safe form of body art. Henna is produced from the Henna plant (lawsonia Inermis). Their leaves contain red dye called ‘Lawsone’ which leaves a dark red stain on skin. Leaves are crushed into fine powder and sifted well. I make fresh henna cones using natural henna powder, organic essential oils, water, and sugar. I do not use or encourage the use of ‘Black henna’ that contains potential harmful chemicals.

Henna goes beyond creating temporary designs on the skin. It is an artistic tool that unites cultures, invites people to embrace connection and cherish their differences. It’s used to celebrate love, beauty, and grace through special occasions, personal and cultural milestones, or to simply relish its artistic elegance.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Some of the bridal henna take about 6-8 hours when the coverage requested is until elbow and above ankle on feed. I love talking to my clients about their preferences and like the challenges they give me to portray their love stories through henna. I like the compliments when I get Instagram post responses like- “This is the best thing I have ever seen,” “You have outdone yourself” At times, I do travel to the clients’ places which are like 2-3 hours one way and driving alone is boring but after a long drive and completing my work, I love hugging my two daughters.
