Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Dennard.
Devin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started when I was 10 years old. My friends and I created a rap group called Lil Money Boyz. Just like every artist, we thought this was our big break. It wasn’t quite the reality we expected, so we went our separate ways. At that moment, my basketball dreams began. And… that pretty much ended up like my rap career. Temporarily on hold until further notice. Once I got to high school, I wanted to give creating another try. Why not? New friends to create another group with, but this time we’ll do comedy. We named ourselves ZEO which meant the greatest ever. It was during this time where I came into myself as a creative. Through collaborating, marketing strategies, acting, and producing, I noticed my ability to entertain separated me from my peers. This ultimately led to the separation of the group and the start of my solo career.
During this journey, it was time for me to face reality. I’m about to graduate soon, so I needed to figure out my next steps. Honestly, this was the hardest thing to face as a creative. What do you do when all you want to do is create without a dollar sign in mind? Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option after seeking advice from mentors of mine. I was pressured into going to college for Film Production. I was told a degree will secure my financial future. However, after experiencing a year in college, it gave me the confirmation I needed. This career is mostly based on experience. Which works best for me because I grew up learning that way. So, I asked myself, “Why am I here?” While reflecting, I came up with a few different paths of how I could gain more valuable experience. I ultimately chose to work with SBOY/Enjoy Detroit, a printing/promotions company and nonprofit organization, founded by David Woods. These entities do extensive work in building the community, such as feeding the homeless, building young entrepreneurs, providing mentorship, and much more. While here, I’ve grown tremendously. With the motivation and support from Mr. Woods, it ignited a spark in me to be the same kid with big dreams while he provides the tools I need to bring that vision to life. This is how I became the Director of Media at SBOY/Enjoy Detroit.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest thing was walking away from college. I got so accustomed to the success I had in it, what everybody else wanted me to do, and the pressure of being the first to do it from my family. But I could also be the first entrepreneur, actor, music artist, director, whatever I want to be. I realized I didn’t have to stay inside that box. Admittedly, I had self-doubt. This combined with outside pressure, made me hesitant to take this step. But ultimately, I knew I had to step out on faith and bet on myself. I knew if I changed nothing, nothing would change.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for creating promotional content. Not just for me, but through SBOY TV/SBOY Promotions, I’m able to create for others (businesses, organizations, artists, and influencers) as well. I’m most proud of not being stuck behind the lens and getting in front to entertain like that kid I was once before. I recently dropped a really big song in the state of Michigan called “King of Southfield,” and it sparked that flame for me to just have fun again. I’m finally able to create in front of the camera freely and also make money doing something I enjoy as well behind it. I find it funny when asked what sets me apart from others because I feel like it’s just an opportunity to brag about what I’ve done and what I’m capable of. But why not take the opportunity? I’m not just a cameraman; I can entertain in front of the camera as well. Rather it’s through music, acting, comedy, or hooping; it’s funny how some things come full circle.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
My new record, “Mama’s Boy,” showcases a different side of me. Although I’m usually jovial, I have a side of me that is passionate about issues in our community. A prominent issue is the lack of fathers actively involved in their children’s lives. No child should grow up with one active parent when both are alive and well. It’s not right, it never will be right, and it takes a record like this to begin this conversation.
