Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Looyenga.
Hi Brent, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started my woodworking journey about 10 years ago in my garage. I would mainly just make items for around the house and for our children. It has been within the past 5-6 years that I have started to make a variety of items to sell online and most recently within the past year at a couple of different local boutiques. We have moved to a new house within the past 6 years, and am thankful for the shop that is located on our property that I am able to utilize as my woodshop.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I really can’t say if it has been smooth or not. This is not my full-time job, but really a hobby that has turned into a small side gig business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time Registered Nurse. It was up until July of 2019 that I worked in a local Regional Pediatric Emergency Dept. I wanted to see what other nursing positions and other directions there were out there, so I took a position as a Clinical Database Specialist for spine surgeons. This allowed me to be home more, see more of my wife and 5 children as well as have more time to start up my small side business, Lake Effect Wood Creations. I am from Michigan, so naturally, I create a lot of Michigan-themed items, such as drink coasters, cutting, and charcuterie boards, and other home decor. I love working with live edge wood, such as walnut, maple and cherry, and occasionally white oak. I also enjoy finding pallets that are being scrapped and turning that wood into something amazing.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Cherish the time that you have with your family and friends. Do not believe everything that the government and social media feeds you. Do your own research with reliable sources and educate yourself. Do not be afraid to take risks.
