Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Peregord.
Hi Audrey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I think my love for dogs started back in the 90s when my grandfather brought home a miniature pinscher puppy. Since then, there has always been a dog in my life. Even though I have always been around dogs, I never thought about having a career with them. After working in customer service and in the medical field, I wanted more out of a job. I dreamed of doing something I loved. Well, I loved dogs. This idea pushed me in the direction of dog training. I attended Animal Behavior College specializing in dog training, becoming a certified dog trainer. I also completed a Pet CPR and First Aid course. This new venture was so exciting. I quickly realized I wanted to be independent, to be my own boss. At the end of Summer 2020, I opened my own business, New Tricks: Puppy and Dog Training LLC. Since then, I have also become an American Kennel Club (AKC) Evaluator. Doing this allows me to test and evaluate dogs for several AKC certification programs. Now I run my own business, have several different group training classes, offer in-home training, and regularly evaluate for the AKC.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some challenges on my way to where I am today. It by no means is an easy process to start your own business, let alone an “in-person” type of business during the peak of COVID-19 and social distancing. Thankfully I had a tremendous amount of support from my fiance, parents, additional family, friends, and of course clients. Overall, it has been a great and enjoyable process.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in positive reinforcement training. I believe if the dogs and owners are having a great time, the hard work and dedication of training are enjoyable. I want my group classes and one on one sessions to be a fun and educational experience. No one should dread training their dog. It is the absolute best feeling when you see an owner’s excitement after their dog completes a task or command they have been working on. You can just feel the joy radiating off of them. I think what sets me apart from others in my work field is that I will treat every single dog I work with as if they were my own. Having three dogs of my own gives me the ability to share relatable experiences I have had with my dogs with my clients. It is easy to tell the relief an owner gets when you explain to them that the struggles they are having with their dog are not out of the ordinary. My favorite thing is to be able to say, “That’s okay my dog once did this…”. It gives hope that if someone else’s dog did some sort of behavior and was able to get past it that their dog can do the same.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I loved the outdoors and being around animals. If I would have been allowed to bring home every dog I had seen that needed a home, my parents would have needed to live in a dog sanctuary. Since I could not bring home every dog, we only ever had two to three dogs at a time. Sometimes we had birds, lizards, cats, hamsters, and fish, I even had a pet crab at one point. Needless to say, not much has changed. I even still continue the tradition of naming all of my pets after Disney characters. Right now, I have my three dogs Tinkerbell, Ryder, and Briar Rose, along with a hamster named Tyrone. I have just always loved animals.
