Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Amr.
Hi Heather, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a full-time, teacher and coach, my weekdays tend to run pretty long. I stopped at my local grocery store to snag some food for my athletes for the next days practice. It was after 10 pm and I was walking out the store towards my vehicle. I noticed a guy walking the parking lot in the same direction as me. He had his hood up, hands in the front of his pocket. I thought it was strange and something in my gut told me this didn’t feel right. He then started to walk across the lot and the angle he took was going to cross paths me, so I just stopped. I took a quick look around to make sure no one else was walking up behind me, and I started to walk backwards back towards the store. The guy looked up at me and just started running. That’s when I knew my feeling was right. I went back into the store and asked to be escorted back to my car and then took like a million wrong turns on my way home because I was paranoid someone was following me. I felt so unsafe in my own neighborhood.
I started to look into what quick and easy safety accessories I could have on me to help feel a bit safer. I made my first keychain for myself and my sister and she convinced me to start a business. My sister and I created Beauty & Brawn with the hopes of providing safety accessories to those who may want a little extra protection in their day-to-day lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Startup costs really get expensive but we believe in our products so we push through. Neither myself or my sister are very tech savvy so we have been doing a lot of craft fairs and pop-up markets to get our products out. We are in the process of creating our website so we’re hoping that will help!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My sister and I both have full-time jobs outside of Beauty & Brawn. My sister Robyn, is in charge of picking and choosing faux leather designs and color pallets. Once the colors are picked out and inventory is sorted, that’s where I come in! Heather cuts and presses all faux leather items, and clips all the keychain accessories together. Both Robyn and myself take photos of our products and manage our IG page.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think our passion for our product and our mission has been most important to our success. I truly feel like our products provide a blanket of security for those who have invested in Beauty & Brawn. We truly care about public safety and the comfort of others.
