Rising Stars: Meet Heather Gappi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Gappi. 

Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved photography and capturing the simple things in life. I just couldn’t believe that you could take a moment and freeze it in time. Growing up my mom was obsessed with taking pictures, so maybe that is where I got it from. Just being able to look through boxes and boxes of old photos make you realize how important it is to capture the moments in your life. When I was 19, I finally saved up enough to buy my first DSLR camera. I took it to Chicago to photograph my nieces for their Christmas card, but unfortunately, someone stole it on the trip. I was heartbroken and took it as a sign to give up on photography. Many years went by and I met my now-husband. I told him the story about how heartbreaking it was when I lost my camera and how I gave up on my passion. Seeing my passion, he surprised me for Christmas and bought me a camera, showing that he believed in me. From that point on it was nothing but trying to master my craft. I went on to take multiple classes, and attend seminars. One of my favorite things has always been creative criticism. I like being told what I am doing wrong, or how I can improve. To this day I continue to educate myself. It is essential for me to continue to learn so that I can give my clients the best version of themselves by being the best version of me. I have been blessed to run a successful business out of Downtown Royal Oak, where I have photographed over 20 NFL players, news anchors, models, and of course my beautiful community. 

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
From the moment my husband gifted me my camera, it has been nothing but an amazing journey. Have there been bumbps along the road? Of course, just like in anything there are good and bad days. But I don’t regret any of the struggles that I have overcome, and the lessons that I have learned. Starting out I had a shoestring budget, but as people started to notice my talent and drive, my business grew and so did my opportunities. 

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer that does all genres of photography but specialize in newborn and maternity. My favorite part of my jobs is capturing the natural beauty of my clients. I love to talk to my clients while we are shooting, to bring out the real them and capture it 

What were you like growing up?
I was extremely outgoing and bubbly. It took a lot to make me mad, and I could make friends anywhere.
