Today we’d like to introduce you to Talina Porter-Smith.
Hi Talina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Talina Porter-Smith owner of D’Portier Beauty. I’ve worked in the beauty field for 25 years. I started working for various cosmetic lines and then started doing hair also. I love them both equally, it’s like providing the complete beauty look. I’m originally from Detroit but lived in Atlanta for 10 years. Atlanta is honestly where I really learned how to be a businesswoman and give hair and makeup everything I got. I walked out on faith in Atlanta and quit my job working at Mac & Auto Show Presenter to open up my own beauty studio. And it grew & grew. Before I knew it, I was opening up a bigger studio. So, after a few years, my husband & I was Blessed with a healthy son. And I wanted our son to be surrounded by more family and also prove to myself I can open up a salon where I’m from. So, when he turned 2, we moved back to Michigan to West Bloomfield. I started renting a suite in Sola Salons for 3 years to build clientele. But staying focus to opening up a black-owned salon & spa in West Bloomfield. I’ve never seen one there and I had to make it happen. And with GOD first kin my life, I did! He gave me the vision and here we are. The First Black-Owned Salon & Spa in West Bloomfield, MI.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Lol It has definitely not been a smooth road, still isn’t. Here’s the thing I didn’t grow up with a lot of money, but I did grow up with A lot of Dreams. I didn’t know how this salon was going to happen but GOD. It takes money to accomplish some dreams, I’m amazed at how GOD worked it out. Another thing in business is you have to keep staying motivated. Believing you can make it happen.

I’m the Owner of D’Portier Beauty Salon & Spa and owner of D’Portier Cosmetics. I’m a hair & makeup artist. I absolutely Love the Beauty field. I recently started training which I love. I specialize is give women the complete glam experience. I’m most proud of opening the first black-owned in West Bloomfield.
