Exploring Life & Business with Asia Denson of Denson Construction Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Denson.

Hi Asia, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I attended Jackson State University and majored in Industrial Technology Engineering with a concentration in Drafting and Design. I wanted to be an architect at first but I found out that I had to work under someone for X amount of years before I could take my test to become licensed. I didn’t want my future in the hands of someone that long so I switched to construction.

I have always loved construction being that I grew up around it. My pops and my brother (now retired) are both brick masons and my grand-pop was a huge carpenter in Georgia and Alabama. I have always loved houses and seeing a house go from ugly to amazing was always interesting to me. I was a highway Engineer from 2007-2013 and I started my company 12/10/2010. I received my MS in Construction management in 2012.

I was laid off from my job with BBF Engineering with no warning or anything. After I exhausted all of my funds 1.5 years later, I worked for another engineering firm during the summer of 2013. 10/13/2013 is the last day I ever worked for someone. I told myself that if I am ever this broke again it will be because I messed up not because of anyone else.

Getting laid off and losing my condo was the best thing to ever happen to me. I remember calling my mom and she said don’t worry about nothing and come on home. That’s all I needed to hear and I just worked my a** off and it all paid off. That 5-year rule for business is the absolute truth.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a contractor/person that actually cares about the house, tenant, client, etc. can be hard, especially in the beginning. My team and I had morals, respect, and loved our craft so we never wanted to put out a sh*tty product/service. I lost a lot of work during those first 5-6 years because landlords just didn’t care and didn’t want to pay for quality work. MI stood by my integrity and mama always said all money ain’t good money and that she will pray for us to get a big contract. She prayed for us to get good clients and for me to get good subcontractors to work with.

It was definitely a learning curve. Working on the highway, getting my master’s, and attending carpentry school all helped me tremendously

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Denson Construction Services, LLC?
We are a full-scale general contracting firm that specializes in full-scale residential/commercial renovations, clean-outs, winterization, property preservation, landscaping, electrical, plumbing, board-ups, and other construction services as needed. We are also certified as Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB), Economically Disadvantaged Woman-Owned Small Business (EDWOSB), Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB).

What sets me apart from others is that I do not mind paperwork. I mean I love it. This allows me to obtain a lot of contracts that most will never obtain simply because they do not want to fill out all of the paperwork. I incorporate technology into my business which is how I communicate with 90% of my clients that I have never met in person to this day.

I am most proud of my integrity, ethics, and quality of service. I will never sacrifice any of those for anyone.

I want readers to know that good work ain’t cheap and that we do it right the first time. If we make a mistake that the client allows us a chance to correct it.

What matters most to you?
Having integrity and my name matters to me the most because that’s all I have. Having a good name in the business world along with integrity, morals, and a great character will always win in the long run and take you anywhere.
