Meet Lisa Tucker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Tucker.

Hi Lisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
On my fifth birthday, the principal of my elementary school asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I answered with a determined, “President of the United States.” Flash forward to my senior year of High School and I was positive that I was going to be a French teacher. Obviously, I was not destined for either one of those career paths.

My first year into college, I was hired at a salon as a receptionist and the rest is history. I did an apprenticeship at that very salon for two years, went on to another salon where I assisted for another two, and basically soaked up all of the education that I could. After that, I worked in a commission-based salon where I built very quickly. Within six months, I was so busy that I hired my first assistant. That is when my love of educating others started to bloom.

As time went on, I learned as much as I could and worked at many different salons trying to figure out the exact direction that I wanted my career to go. Eighteen years in and now I am a studio owner, I offer private coaching and mentorship, and later this year I will be launching my first independent education program!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I believe that hard work pays off. It isn’t easy to build in an industry like mine, but I have always been committed to being the best at what I do. I have worked long hours, tirelessly promoted myself (before social media was around), and made some mistakes. When I first started my career, it was difficult to find the clients that we’re the best fit for me. Especially before social media. I learned that my clients were the best method of promotion – word of mouth became my lifeblood, and made it easier to find the right clients for me because I already knew the people referring them.

Every single thing I have done has landed me where I am today and I am so grateful for that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Dimensional Color Specialist. Early on in my career, I knew that color was going to be my specialty. I remember when color theory clicked for me and I couldn’t get enough after that. Within the past five years, I have curated a clientele of strictly color clients. I am known for creating dimensional hair color looks and recently I have started sharing my techniques on Instagram, which I call “Rooted Roadmaps.”

Aside from that, I have started mentoring those that share my same passion. My goal is to elevate the beauty industry.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe that having a mentor is key and that we should never stop learning. I never want to be the smartest person in the room. Asking questions and remaining open-minded is what will lead to excellence. You have to ask for what you want. If you don’t, you will be left behind. I have had many mentors in my career because I wasn’t afraid to ask and they have all made me better within my business.

When it comes to networking, your clients are your best advertisement. If you give them an unforgettable experience then they will send people. Leading with integrity amongst your peers will gain industry respect.
