Life & Work with Suki Liu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suki Liu.

Hi Suki, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Hi, I’m Suki! I have always loved calligraphy and lettering ever since I could remember. I found myself doodling and practicing on all sorts of notebooks and take-out boxes. I picked up all sorts of different hobbies throughout the years, but calligraphy was the one that really stuck with me.

It all started with friends and coworkers seeing my lettering and through networking, I would take on random lettering projects here and there: graduation cards, logos, wedding pamphlets, etc. I decided to establish myself as Signed by Suki in 2019 after getting a steady stream of projects and offers.

Presently, I specialize in event signage and menus for weddings and local businesses, I host and teach beginner-friendly calligraphy workshops in the metro Detroit area, and I specialize in hand engraving letters into glass (such as a perfume bottle) that make a great custom gift.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The pandemic was a huge hit on the wedding industry, which in turn took a hit on my business in its second year. But when one door closes, another one opens, and everything worked out in the end.

Some of the biggest struggles I have are with myself: I am my own worst critic and with social media, it’s so easy to compare yourself to other people in your field and become self-conscious.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey to success is different, and everyone’s definition of success also varies from person to person. The journey to small business ownership has been full of discovery in many ways. There have been plenty of wins, but for those moments where I didn’t necessarily “win”, I’m grateful to have learned a lesson along the way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently specialize in signage and decor for important events such as weddings, birthdays, bridal showers, graduations, etc. These signs are often made on acrylic, chalkboard, wood, and my personal favorite – (ornate) mirrors.

I make signs such as wedding seating charts and wedding signage in general. I also work with local businesses and create chalkboard menus on a small and large scale.

I teach calligraphy workshops which focuses on getting down the muscle memory and learning the basics of pointed pen calligraphy while enjoying a drink at a fun venue with some friends and other like-minded individuals.

I also specialize in engraving glass products by hands such as wine and liquor bottles, champagne flutes, wine glasses, and perfume bottles. These make wonderful custom gifts that are one-of-a-kind and truly unique.

A moment I’m proud of is having the privilege of creating a design for a tattoo. I think it’s pretty cool to say my lettering is tattooed on a good friend’s body forever!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I think I knew calligraphy was my calling when I won “Best Cursive” in the second grade. I’m kidding, kind of.
