Today we’d like to introduce you to De’Sia Brown.
Hi De’Sia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I would love to!
I am the President of POISE (People of Intense Self-Expression) which is an organization that was created to promote free self-expression. Originally from Flint, MI, I was not always presented with many ways to express who I really am or what it even means to be a creative. As the president of POISE, I am able to encourage and support my team in their personal endeavors. The first year POISE was founded the organization raised donations in support of the Flint Water Crisis, and this is part of the reason I joined this wonderful organization. Being able to push people to display the best versions of themselves while also finding ways to give back to communities in need really resonated with me. My journey came around full circle in 2022 when I was able to lead and organize the annual fashion show after a hiatus due to the pandemic and give back to another deserving cause, Center for Success Detroit, the way POISE did to my hometown community.
Additionally, I thoroughly enjoy working with creatives in the community and giving others a platform to showcase their talents. I aspire to do more of this as a Strategist and Creative Advocate.
My overall experience with POISE has been nothing short of amazing, fun, and impactful. I hope it continues to be the same, if not better, for others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worth having comes easy.
It has definitely been a rocky road in certain areas. I have experienced almost every position in this organization and every single one has pushed me to grow. Currently, my position as President has allowed me to really lead my team and projects in ways that are not always easy. You definitely have to really learn what processes work for your team and improve a variety of qualities within yourself as an individual to lead others to greatness while making sure they are taken care of.
Realistically, there are many things that can go wrong when producing small and especially large events. For example, our most recent fashion show, REVIVAL, had a few bumps in the road, but it is nothing like having a support system to be there for you. Taylor Scott, the founder of POISE and a very close friend of mine, is one of those people. It is important to know when to ask from help and who to ask. Also, I always try to make sure my team, models, designers, vendors, talents, etc. have a seamless and enjoyable experience by making sure they are not affected by any inconveniences or things that may be going wrong as the President of the organization.
Nonetheless, it is important to know how to handle conflict and keep going.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a recent graduate of Wayne State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing. I have a passion for strategy and creative directing.
I have had the pleasure of working with various companies around Metro Detroit simultaneously while pursuing my degree and can’t wait to further my career professionally. When it comes to strategy and creative projects, I’m your girl!
I am most proud of the woman I am today. I have grown so much personally to show up the way that I do today. I have been able to accomplish a variety of things in just the last couple of years alone.
I have spent a lot of time recently reflecting on how I have been able to make it through my challenging times and accomplish my goals. I believe I am very determined and headstrong. My experiences have been able to mold me into a very ambitious, graceful, and intelligent woman. More importantly, I have to give credit to God’s favor more than anything. This is why I am the way that I am today. I am the only person that can be me and this sets me apart from others.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
As I have grown, I realize more and more every day that my happiness is what matters the most to me.
Nothing compares to being genuinely happy and moving in alignment for me. I have experienced times when I wasn’t aligned, wasn’t prioritizing myself, and just honestly going through a lot at such a young age. Although it was very tough, those experiences allowed me to realize how important it is to put my happiness first and genuinely take care of myself.
It is so important to make sure you’re good before you can show up for anyone else! Put the work in for yourself and watch how your life transforms, but please understand you are forever growing.
