Hidden Gems: Meet Reilly Gomez of Detroit Salsa Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reilly Gomez.

Hi Reilly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In middle school, my twin brother Finn and I had a business elective class. Our teacher was Mrs. Lobb, she assigned a project which involved designing and creating your own business. My brother Finn had the idea to sell our family salsa as we had always sold it on the side to our teachers and friends growing up. Long story short we took the idea seriously and started to reach out to local markets, liquor stores and craft shows near us in order to attempt it. Long story short, it worked! With a lot of help from friends and family along the way we have grown to the size, we are today. Hopefully, we continue on our path of growth long into the future.,

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
You know, it has been quite a smooth road for us. We are very fortunate that we ended up in the position we are considering we purchased our retail location mid pandemic and faced the difficulties with that. Over the course of our growth, we have always had an incredibly supportive fan base which helps more than is imaginable. We did encounter some hiccups looking for the perfect location, getting through all the hoops for inspection while trying to stay as consistent with deliveries to our markets. There were a lot of long days up until today and I am sure there will be plenty more.

We’ve been impressed with Detroit Salsa Company, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a local, hand-crafted, small-batch salsa company. We focus on ensuring our products are always fresh and strong with flavor. Being known for our bold cilantro and the perfect amount of spice while maintaining our flavor. All of our ingredients are sourced locally with an emphasis on being fresh and natural. We offer a mild and macho of both our traditional red salsa along with our tomatillo avocado mixture we call our green salsa. Our customers love our tortilla chips as well. Having 25 markets encompassing southeast Michigan.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If you’re trying to start your own business the best advice, I can give you is to just go for it. Take the leap and go along for the ride. Make sure your product has an appeal that no one else does and never give up. I wish when I started that knowing people and having a strong customer relationships are some of the most important factors in success.
