Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Assenmacher.
Hi Marcus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I spent my early musical career as both guitarist and manager for View from Ida and For All, We Know through both the band’s Warped Tour runs in ’07 and ‘09. In 2009, I moved to NYC to pursue a BA in Music Business from NYU. Post-graduation, I built up songwriting credits with Teddy Geiger, Kevin Garrett, Ricky Reed, Junglepussy, Dillon Cooper, and more. I also continued to work as a session and touring artist, performing for Teddy Geiger, Lauv, Sammy Adams, and more.
From 2012-to 2014, I served as the Director of A&R for Robot of the Century Music Publishing. Working with acts like Young the Giant, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, and more. Shortly after, I served as Director of Events for the American Association of Independent Music—where I was a six-time Executive Producer of the Libera Awards (the largest independent music awards show in the world). At that time, I had also started my first music studio in Brooklyn, NY focusing on bringing quality engineering, mixing, and mastering services to all artists and creatives.
Eventually, becoming what is now known as SayHeySounds.
I had an opportunity to move back to MI, after about 10 years in NYC, and built out a new music studio in South Lyon, MI.
SayHeySounds is a full-service music production company with locations in NY, LA, and MI. We specialize in One Stop sync licensing with our boutique library curated by independent producers and songwriters throughout the world.
We’re currently taking song submissions for our music catalog at the following address:
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
A music career, in general, is never an easy path but worth every struggle if you love it! Especially with the way digital service providers have decided to pay out artists, songwriters, producers, etc. Let’s just say you need to have cyclical income streams as an artist, songwriter, or producer. You need to have multiple ways of making revenue and surround yourself with a team of people who know the ins and outs of each of those areas to make money. The music industry wasn’t set up to be easy to navigate and will always have moving parts with technology changing as much as it does. A lot of artists leave money on the table they don’t know is out there because of how the music industry is set up. Luckily, there are a number of companies that have helped to streamline a lot of these processes over the years.
Another great way for an artist to make some additional money and gain exposure is through sync licensing. The reason we started SayHeySounds was to help in finding these opportunities for local talent here in Michigan but also worldwide. We want to work together with artists to help find potential placement opportunities that not only work for the brands but also the artists.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about SayHeySounds?
SayHeySounds is a full-service music production company with locations in NY, LA, and MI. We specialize in One Stop sync licensing with our boutique library curated by independent producers and songwriters throughout the world. I believe what sets us apart from a lot of other music libraries is our ability to edit/mix/master records in-house (if needed) and plug those records directly into the contacts we’ve made in the industry over the years.
In addition, most of our agreements are non-exclusive and very transparent. We strive to be a company that helps to assist in getting placements for our artists without holding them into some lengthy exclusive contract. As an artist myself, I know the importance of being able to guide your own career on your own terms. I believe we’ve done a great job structuring the company in that manner and we’re very excited to continue to grow the catalog with this in mind.
We also work directly with some very well-known artists/producers/writers that have some amazing credits under their belt. Most of these artists/producers/writers have given us unreleased tracks that no one else has access to. This gives us the opportunity to work with a brand/company on cross-promotional campaigning for both their needs as well as the artist/producer.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think it’s very important to take risks and even more important to not be afraid of failure. Although, you need to learn from your failures in order to make better informed future risks. Things rarely happen overnight and a lot of very successful people fail a number of times before they are actually “successful”.
They learned from their mistakes and kept at it!
