Check Out Morgan Rose Edema’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Rose Edema.  

Hi Morgan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I got my first full-time cosmetology job at just 19 years old. It was a high-end, well-known salon in Nashville TN, the salon was known for stylists that specialized in certain areas and really focused on learning that skill the best they could. I was so new to the industry at this point, I had no idea what I liked best, or where I excelled. Updos were always fun for me, and I remember specifically one of my coworkers telling me that I was good at them and should be proud of myself. Fast forward three years and I had moved back to Michigan. I was working in a quaint little tourist town that hosted tons of weddings. I was working every single Saturday and really started to excel in the bridal hair industry, I took classes and found stylists I admired and wanted to learn from, I started doing a few bridal parties on the side, but was having to take a day off from my job just to work and do the same thing. I’ll be honest, working every single Saturday gets old. I was working for commission and it just wasn’t worth it anymore. 

Eventually, I went out on my own and became my own boss. I started booking weddings and instead of doing one or two updos on a Saturday, I would take on the entire bridal party. I started with just small bridal parties of four, sometimes five, but I kept pushing myself, learning how to style faster and more efficiently, eventually I was doing 6 and 7 styles, then one day I had my first 9 styles bridal party. I tossed and turned and stressed the whole night about it, but I successfully styled 9 girls in one morning. it was a Saturday well worth working. I kept raising my prices as my name got out there and grew to a successful one women team specializing in bridal styling. this pattern went on for a few years. 

I had a friend in the industry that I would talk business with often, we were having a conversation one day about my timing and quick work and how I can create a beautiful style in 20 mins like nothing. She encouraged me to start teaching this method and help another stylist achieve a similar outcome after a year of digging in, I created “the Four Figure Weekend” an online bridal styling master’s program for hairstylists. It teaches how to speed up you’re styling and cut out the unnecessary steps. How to create long-lasting, sturdy styles in 30 mins instead of 120 mins. My passion has always been in the bridal industry, but now I’m happy to say I am teaching other stylists how to maximize their time and make working a Saturday morning well with it! 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has been far from a smooth journey for me. it was years of hustling and grinding trying to build up a strong reputation for myself in the bridal industry. I was doing hair for family and friends cheap, taking any and all referrals, marketing myself as much as possible, and taking as many classes as I could afford. Finally, I was charging my worth, I had systems in place, I was booked and it was going to be an amazing bridal hair year. I had big goals and I was set up to crush them. This was unfortunately 2020, Covid hit and all weddings were halted. it was a long year and during this time I dreamed up the Four Figure Weekend! all at once I was right back to the hustle and grind. trying to shift from a bridal stylist to a bridal hair educator. I needed to build trust in the industry and that takes a lot of time and effort. 2021 was a year with two years’ worth of weddings pushed into one season, plus launching, marketing, and growing this education program. it was by far the busiest and toughest year of my career. there were many days I wanted to give up, to shut my brain off and just relax. I had to keep working, continue marketing, stay consistent and just trust that it would be worth it. 

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a full-time hairstylist. I am currently opening my own salon, where I can host education classes. I am passionate about cultivating a space for other stylists to build high-end, and sustainable careers and this salon will be that space for them. I work behind the chair cutting, coloring hair, and installing extensions. I myself will style around 35 bridal parties this year, and I teach as many stylists as I can about bridal hair and how to maximize their time and make working the weekend SO worth it. 

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I have a strong worth ethic. I grew up in a home with parents that worked for themselves and I saw firsthand what hard work and long hours can do. I knew that I needed to be consistent and put the extra work in for a few years, to build up to where I am now. I’m too suborn to let myself fail, so I’m going to keep pivoting and working until it’s figured out.
