Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Hallberg.
Hi Alexa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started as most photographers do, shooting everything under the sun. Seniors, families, kids, you name it. A friend reached out to me and asked if I would do her boudoir session. At that point, I had never even heard of a boudoir so I looked it up and was shocked. I was like “you want me to take pictures of you like that?!”. Sure enough, I did the session anyway. I didn’t think she would like the pictures because I wasn’t very confident in how well I did since it was my first time. To my surprise, she loved the images. It made me feel really good to make her feel that good about herself. She referred a friend and then they referred another friend and the ball got rolling from there! I realized really quickly that the boudoir is what set my soul on fire. I was so passionate about this genre and there weren’t many people doing it so I decided one day to rebrand myself into a specialized boudoir photographer and that’s what I have been doing since!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve had a few struggles along the way. In 2018 I left an abusive marriage and had to make my little boudoir business on the side my main source of income. Learning how to be financially independent and heal after going through 7 years of abuse was tough. Not only did I feel like I was relearning how to be a normal functioning adult but I had to learn how to build a business from the ground up too. That is a lot of change in a relatively short time frame. Between leaving an abusive marriage, trying to find my place in the competitive photography industry, and getting hit with a global pandemic, I have faced my fair share of adversity. However, it all allowed me to grow in more ways than I thought possible. Each time I have been knocked down I have stood up a little taller and a lot more in love with what I do.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional boudoir photographer! What sets me apart from others is that I am formally trained in the art of boudoir. I have mentored some of the best boudoir photographers in the country and I have brought all that knowledge right here to the great lakes bay region. From the initial inquiry all the way through the final delivery of the images I walk hand in hand with every client throughout the entire process so they are as comfortable and prepared as possible. Since I spend so much individual attention with each client, I only have a limited number of sessions every month. One big aspect of my client experience is wardrobe consulting. I own a lingerie and bra fitting boutique in Downtown Bay City called Lex & Co and I run that alongside my boudoir business. One of the perks for my boudoir clients is that they can come in for a free bra fitting and personal shopping experience. This means that every woman truly gets the VIP experience.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was incredibly introverted. In high school, I was known as “the library girl” because my nose was always stuck in a book and I interned in the library during my junior and senior years. My love for photography started in my junior year of high school when I took a photography class. I got to practice with my very own DSLR and took pictures of my friends. I really started to come out of my shell by creating art with a camera.
