Meet Deborah Bland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Bland.

Hi Deborah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had a love for all things beauty. I started my own nail business at 13 and began experimenting with makeup in 8th grade. It started with eyebrows- of course, me drawing them awfully! I got talked about and snickered at by the kids I called my friends and it caused my self-esteem to plummet.

I took an oath to practice until I could successfully do a beautiful full face. By the time my senior year of high school came, I got complimented often on my makeup skills, even though I wasn’t quite satisfied! This let me want to pursue my cosmetology license to be able to practice my craft on clients. Turns out, cosmetology school is mostly hair… I took that as an opportunity to start my makeup career online while attending school.

During that year of cosmetology school, I posted makeup looks daily, and many of them began to go viral. I eventually graduated, got my license, and began working in an amazing salon working on clients. After making so many online tutorials, businesses and companies began reaching out for promotion. I only started taking them after reaching my goal of 100k supporters online!

I wanted to focus on building a fully support-based following and I did just that. I was eventually able to fully work online and years later started my company BeatsByDeb Cosmetics LLC which sells the products that I use to achieve my best looks! I am beyond grateful for my support online and my family’s support in helping me with my dream to inspire other artists online.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of my main struggles have been what most people online encounter, the hate. Hate comments and negative people online are frustrating, but I have the method of turning off my post notifications so it doesn’t pop up on my phone to ruin my mood. People are entitled to their opinion; therefore, I don’t tend to block or delete comments. But I will not sit here and say it doesn’t affect me and my mental health. Find what works best for you, and my trick is to stay on the app and show love to those who support me. Try not to focus on 1 mean comment out of the 100 great ones!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I believe my audience loves that I give them what they want to see in terms of creativity. When it comes to makeup, not everyone wants simple looks, just like some people prefer everyday or more “achievable” makeup over the full body paint alien looks! Finding a nice balance of looks to try helps push my skills and the range of looks I post. Plus, it’s really fun to step out of my comfort zone, and I often show when I struggle. People can relate to this and quite enjoy it!

What sets my work apart is my signature lowlight flash on videos! People love the lack of flashback and smoothness of my looks under that lighting specifically. I use my products to create a glow that is unmatched.

What was you like growing up?
Growing up, I always had my siblings around me. There are 7 of us in total, but my oldest sister and brother had been married with children before I was even born! So, I was very close to my five siblings in the house with me- including my twin brother. Family means everything to me, which is why I always wanted to grow up to do something that could either involve or inspire them. My online career has helped all of my siblings aspire to create their own journeys of business! Gaming, retail, online management, and marketing… the opportunities are endless. Through experiences I faced while growing an audience online, we were all able to learn different ways of creating passive income, and business endeavors we never could imagine!

Throughout my teenage years, I always had a passion for beauty and making people feel better about themselves just by a simple thing of a hair change, or bright nail polish! Even a little blush and mascara can turn my frown upside down! So, I really focused on what way could I make people smile! It started at 12 when I create my own nail business, starting work on my mom’s clients from her daycare! I have always been a businesswoman- from making my own cards and social media, to marketing myself wherever I went. Word of mouth still means something, and I used the skills I saw my mom practicing in her business, and applied them to mine!
