Life & Work with Savanna Grewe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Grewe.

Hi Savanna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started doing hair when I was a very young child. I have two sisters, so they both fell victim to my trials and errors! I was the “go-to” hair girl for my cheerleading squad and loved learning new braids and styles. It was around the 7th grade when I realized I had a huge passion for doing hair, and started to consider making it my career. Then, when I was a junior in high school, I was presented with the opportunity to do a beauty school co-op, and I loved every minute of it. After graduation, I jumped all in at The Beauty Bar Salon and haven’t looked back since! I’ve been there for 8 years now, and continue to learn and grow my business. I specialize mostly in blondes and balayage, but I love when a good color correction or brunette sit in my chair too! And of course, both of my sisters are still my Guinea pigs, but they have much better hair now!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles in the beginning was transitioning from the small farm town I grew up in, to the metropolis that is Sterling Heights. Being right on Hall Road, I met a TON of interesting, different, wonderful people and realized I truly wasn’t in Kansas anymore! It took a minute to get used to the hustle and bustle of our very busy salon, while I grew up going to my mom’s friend’s basement for haircuts! It’s funny now to talk about my childhood with clients who grew up much differently than me. It’s definitely a nice conversation point!

Another struggle I faced was building a clientele base! I was in a new city, 40 minutes away from most people I knew, and I was very young. It definitely took longer than expected to get to a place where I felt comfortable and solid. And then Covid hit, and we were shut down for three months. That definitely knocked me down for a while. The comeback since then has been great, and I would say now that my business is thriving! I’m very grateful for that, as I know a lot of the world could not say the same.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist specializing in blonde and balayage services. I love beautiful, healthy, long blonde hair, and strive to give my clients the hair of their dreams! If you sit in my chair and tell me you want blonde, you’re my hero.

I am most proud of the experience you have in my chair! I take care to listen very closely to your wants and do my best to bring your aspirations to fruition. Being a younger stylist, I find it very easy to connect with my own generation, and our appointments always end up sounding like some friends just hanging out for a few hours! I very much enjoy that. I also find it quite easy to connect with older generations, because a lot of my clients see me more than they see their own family. I become sort of like a daughter to them, and I love learning of all their stories and adventures! It’s like hanging out with my own mom for the day! I’m very lucky to be in a job that brings myself, and my clients, this much joy.

I’ve found that while doing great hair is important, it’s substantially more important to be a great person. If you are kind and cheerful and easy to be around, you’ll attract those who want to be around you! That’s my philosophy with every appointment. I’m definitely not a match for everyone, and it took a long time to come to terms with that, but I’ve definitely made some great friends along the way!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is with my dad, at our family vacation spot in Harrisville, Michigan. It was late at night and I couldn’t sleep, so my dad and I took flashlights down to the beach to watch the tide. He used the flashlight to show me the Big and Little Dippers and mentioned they were almost 100 light-years away. As a child, that amount of distance baffled me. It still does! I remember my dad saying that because of the great distance, the light we shown up on the stars wouldn’t reach them in either of our lifetimes. It’s a small memory, and I’m sure my dad wouldn’t even remember it now, but it’s something I think about often. The greatest man I know, teaching me so many things then, just like he’s continued to do every day since.
