Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Borger.
Hi Shannon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve loved makeup and skincare probably since I could walk. I remember growing up watching my mom apply her makeup every day, and how beautiful she would always look. My grandma always spoke about the importance of taking care of your skin and staying out of the sun. She had the most beautiful skin; I remember really young I would sneak into her room and be in awe at all the beautiful glass bottles of skincare she had on her dresser. Growing up I had pretty bad cystic acne, it started at 14. I remember trying everything under the sun to try and get rid of it, but it just ended up making it worse. Makeup was my comfort, to be able to cover it and feel normal. Most of my friends didn’t have acne, and if they did it wasn’t the severity I had. I knew I wanted to help others like myself, which led me to wanting to become an Esthetician and work in the beauty industry. I graduated from cosmetology school in 2011 and landed my first job in the industry at Sephora, that opened up many opportunities for my future. I know my purpose was to help others feel the best version of themselves. When I was a makeup artist and esthetician at Bluemercury, that inspired me to start my Instagram page in 2016. I wanted to share my love and knowledge of skincare and makeup products with others. My Instagram page is more than just pretty pictures of makeup and skincare, it has helped me through some hard times in my life. It has been an amazing creative outlet for me. The skincare and beauty community is amazing, I’ve made so many friends and I love that I’ve been able to connect and support local entrepreneurs, and their businesses. During the pandemic, I had my first baby and became a stay-at-home mom. I had taken a break for a couple of years from my Instagram page and fell back in love with content creating in 2021. I’ve fallen in love with product photography and pushing myself to become a better content creator. I love to help people find the perfect products for their skin while sharing my knowledge.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Content creating on social media is very competitive, there are so many wonderful creators and influencers out there. It can be tricky to find your niche, and make yourself stand out to others. Imposter syndrome is something I have struggled with, and being a perfectionist.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a skincare & beauty content creator; I photograph and create videos of products for brands to use on their social media. I teach others about skincare ingredients and help others find their perfect products. I specialize in products for dry acne-prone skin. I love to share my knowledge and education of being an esthetician. I’m most proud of staying consistent and turning my passion into a new career.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Bad luck has helped me work harder and turn it into success for the future. I work to change bad luck into growth for future experiences. I’m always learning about what it takes to grow as a content creator. Sometimes the simplest photo that I didn’t put a ton of time into will get the most attention, other times that isn’t always the case. I will put a lot of time into a project, and I didn’t get lucky with the algorithm.
