Rising Stars: Meet Shay Bailey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay Bailey. 

Hi Shay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello! 

I have been a beauty professional for over 15 years and a creative for as far back as I can remember. 

After earning my B.A from Oakland University in 2005, I became a full-time beauty professional, working for LaChae Cosmetics and freelancing for a small celebrity clientele. I then went on to work for M.A.C Cosmetics, where my career grew to include managing brand sales and operations, managing retail partnerships, and developing future leaders in beauty. 

After spending 13 years with M.A.C., in 2019, I started my consultancy, Shay B. Beautiful LLC. I did so, using my original freelance makeup artistry business name, with the vision to grow Shay B. Beautiful into a global resource for those looking to brand themselves and their ideas. www.shaybbeautiful.com 

Currently, I work with beauty, wellness, and creative brands to design brand guidelines, create brand assets, development marketing strategies and improve their overall digital presence. This is in addition to continuing to work part-time as a Freelance Make-Up Artist. 

I also own a start-up beauty tech brand, My Beauty Kit. A beauty accessory brand and mobile app designed to help consumers track their beauty purchases. www.mybeautykitmobile.com 

Aside from my work, I am a wife to a Detroit-based entrepreneur/real estate investor and a mother to my three beautiful daughters, ages 15, 12, and 5. 

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My road has always been rewarding, because I am working in an industry that I enjoy. However, I hasn’t always been smooth. Just months after starting my consultancy, the world shut down due to the pandemic. This put an end to networking opportunities necessary to build relationships and get my brand in front of potential clients. 

I did use this time to refine my services, build my digital presence and learn more about the brands I planned to support in the future. 

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always felt a sense of peace when I am creating. As a child, art was my favorite subject. I would often stay after school to work on special projects with my art teacher, resulting in my artwork being on display at youth art exhibitions. 

Today I specialize in elevating how consumers experience brands, goods, and services. I am known for having a strong attention to detail as it relates to brand messaging, developing creative assets, and advanced makeup artistry. 

I am most proud of being a hardworking #girlmom. My daughters inspire me to keep going when times get tough. I know they are always watching me and therefore I want to be their first example of what’s possible through focus and determination. 

What sets me apart in my consultancy is that I value “white glove” service. I work 1:1 with my clients to understand their unique set of circumstances and deliver a true customized service experience. I have a personal investment in each and every project. My professional reputation is important to me. 

What sets me apart in relation to my beauty brand is my ability to bring years of beauty and consumer service experience to a space where minority women don’t often have a seat at the table. Beauty Tech is a growing category and I am committed to influencing in that space using My Beauty Kit App (app currently in beta testing on iOS). 

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
My office is full of coffee table books that I flip through to ignite my creativity. I love the stories told through photographs. 

I also read branding and marketing books by Audria Richman and Donald Miller. I have several from both authors as my go-to resources.
