Check Out Jenny & Kyle Primm’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny & Kyle Primm.

Hi Jenny & Kyle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi, we are Jenny & Kyle Primm and we own Primm n Proper Pickens LLC. Our business thrives off of the “thrill of the hunt” and thrifting for treasures; which we both started at a young age! As far as the beginning of our business, that dates back to 2017. We had just purchased a large farmhouse that was built in the late 1800s. It has a large two-story garage and barn that we had zero idea what we would do with. Shortly after we discovered you could buy something for cheap and sell for profit. We started going to a local auction and buying everything; from furniture to home decor to vintage toys! We started selling on marketplace and then moved into a storefront where we had our own booth space. While it started as a side hustle, it quickly became a way to help us fund our fertility treatment. So, then we upscaled and took advantage of our large space and hosted barn sales; they were a HUGE hit! People started coming to us and wanting a way to contact us and to let us know what kind of furniture they were looking for. This then led us to create a Facebook page for the business that we didn’t realize we created. At this time, we only dabbled in painting furniture, but then people liked what we did and wanted us to paint furniture them! As our furniture painting business grew, we moved away from buying “everything” and put our focus on making a profit on furniture and selling furniture; which subsequently meant closing up our booth space. Our son was born (thankful for IUI fertility treatment) in 2019 and we decided to slow down, little did we know that would only last a few months haha. In October 2019 there was a new furniture/home decor store opening and the store owner reached out to us to become a vendor. We attended the grand opening, and thought “what the heck”. From there all of our free time was dedicated to painting furniture, because we were both still working full time and taking care of an infant! This new store was BOOMING and we began selling more than we could ever imagine. We set goals and crushed them. It was really an amazing feeling to see what we had built for ourselves with really no intentions of doing so! Fast forward to August 2021 we finally reached a place that we felt comfortable enough with Kyle quitting his full-time 9-5 and taking on the business full time. We would be lying if we said we weren’t scared, but we had put in the work and were ready to take a leap of faith. The rest is history! Here we are now, 8 months later and the proud owners of a furniture refinishing and woodworking business that gives us the freedom of Kyle having a flexible schedule working for himself.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest struggle in the beginning, well even now, is time. Can we get some more of it? Haha. In the beginning, it truly was a lot of dedication of our personal time. We would pack our dinner on auction nights and go right from work to the auction and be there until 9 pm. Then add in the 35-minute drive home, unloading (we didn’t have a covered trailer then, just a truck), then go to bed and prepare for our “real jobs” the next day. When we started to expand I (Jenny) can remember painting with a baby on my lap, painting during nap time, and anytime we could! Even now Kyle spends most of his evenings working in the garage, generally until 11 pm-1 am.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Furniture painting, restoration, and woodworking. What sets us apart: Our wood-stained furniture tops! We get a lot of compliments on our stained tops, and Kyle has put a lot of work into perfecting them!

I (Jenny) really love the cutting boards Kyle makes, there’s just something about handmade!

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Lots of different ways! The easiest and cheapest is word of mouth! Instagram and Facebook are also free advertisement for us, so a simple “like” or “share” of post truly goes a long way for us! Previously we had the opportunity to work with another small business; Barley and Vine. They chose us to make their charcuterie boards, and wine/beer flights!
